Very high CPU running Sims 4

Running the latest version of Sims 4, I'm seeing very high CPU, often 100%. It seems that the game is just stealing all the CPU on the PC (and it is a relatively new PC with an i5 12th gen processor, so not a low end machine). I'm not seeing crashes (even though "crashing" was the closest tag I could find for a performance issue), so maybe this is normal for the Sims and it just uses what CPU there is, but no other game comes close to this load.

Is this normal?

Thanks, Pete

  • fjdklsj  Does this happen the whole time you're playing, or just at certain times?  It's normal to see high usage during loading screens and the occasional spike elsewhere, but you're right, the CPU shouldn't be pegged at 100% the whole time.  Are you sure Sims 4 is the only contributor to the problem?  It's also possible that other processes are running alongside the game and eating some CPU as well.

For reference, please provide a dxdiag.  Hit Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

Same issue here. Nothing else running in the background. I've restarted my game and my computer multiple times. I play for a couple of hours and suddenly my mouse it not tracking when I move it. I check the cpu usage and it's jumping between 37-89% very rapidly. It's only happened in the last couple of weeks so it had to be the recent upgrade. it's extremely frustrating. It makes it so I eventually have to quite playing.

fjdklsjThe Sims 4 may not be your problem, take a look at this Youtube video explaining Intel's 13the Gen overheating/overclocking problem . . .

"Intel 13900K & 13600K Temperature Myths BUSTED" by Hardware Canucks. Although it is 2yrs old, It is still relevant today as Intel has rolled out a micro code fix for troubled CPU's as far as I understand. You'll have to DYOR for the fix as I don't know where to find it, but maybe JayzTwoCents might refer to it here. . .

"Do this NOW if you want your Intel CPU to live..." by JayzTwoCents (from 1:56) . . . I hope this helps fellow simmer.

  • MysticTigg  Is Sims 4's CPU usage jumping, or just the overall usage, or can you not tell?  Does it help to put the EA App in offline mode before launching the game?  This would cut off your access to the Gallery and block your ability to redeem your points from the current event, but the game should otherwise run as normal.

I don't see any obvious issues in your dxdiag, and of course your CPU shouldn't be maxed out running Sims 4.  However, some mods might increase CPU usage in an uneven way, so please test with no mods or custom content at all, if you haven't already, just to be sure that this isn't a contributing factor.
