IMPORTANT QUESTION: do we know if Businesses & Hobby will cause a similar effect and ruin a save file on its own? Based on one comment in this thread adding the new pack caused their save file to corrupt.
Seeing as the room devision mechanic is about the same in both packs, I'd be want to know if it can break my game the same way even if I had no residential rental lots in the save but with For Rent installed. Who would want to buy the pack if it has the same issue?!
From what I understand about this corruption, it is not being caused by a specific game mechanism (so residential rentals or small businesses, for example), it happens when your save file has become larger than the Sims 4 engine can cope with. It just so happens that residential rentals bump up save file sizes by a sizeable amount, therefore people with For Rent are far more likely to experience it. With the addition of B&H, it may have pushed some users into the corruption state as each new world adds more potential for corruption.
Basically you are in the danger zone if you have a large amount of EA's DLC and if your worlds are very built up with larger lot sizes. Also if you are playing legacy saves with many generations of data (particularly things like photographs.)

edit: the new forum makes it unclear, but i was replying to Elly001, and not StephenLunar, who definitely should work for EA!
That's a nice theory, but untrue. It happened to me on a brand new save that i hadn't even started playing yet, and where it was populated only by my one blank slate sim, and the hidden households (i had deleted all the sims in manage household).
I had barely started building up, (having restarted the game several times due to that other bug when putting down lots) BUT i had started by putting down 5 residential rentals.
And just to reiterate, 5 EMPTY, no tenants or landlord because i hadn't started playing the save yet.
But a spa i had put down in Tomarang, suddenly was labelled as residential, and when i went in, it had reverted back to the original residential lot that was there.
So, yeah, it definitely have to do with the r-rentals. Please stop telling people it's basically their fault and covering up for EA. They made a DLC that we can't actually play with. That's not okay.
(p.s. yes, i have sent them my save right when it happened two weeks ago.)

That's a completely different bug you're talking about. This is not about the lots that cannot be changed to other than residentals without being reset, but about the issue where lots completely disappear, being empty and the error code 800 during loading. And of course, this is not the players' fault. The team urgently need to work on this issue. Especially if there are to be new expansion-packs in the future.

um, no it isn't. please read the thread from the beginning. it's about lots reverting to default lots. if it was an empty lot, then yeah, the lot "disappeared".
no one in this thread aside from you have ever mentioned an error message. maybe you're the one in the wrong place.

Let me be clear, I am NOT covering up for EA and I have certainly never told players this is their fault?! I am absolutely devastated by this bug and the fact that I can't play the save file I have invested so much time and energy into. There's nothing 'nice' about my theory, as this is is the way I and many other legacy players like to populate their worlds and should be a basic requirement of the game. So I desperately want EA to fix it and I think its appalling they've allegedly known about it for years and have done nothing until now to address it (and even now, I feel it's pretty much the bare minimum to ask players to send over their save files, why aren't they robustly testing their own save files?) and have instead continued to relase more DLC which is likely just going to make the issue worse.
What I HAVE seen is players state that this save file corruption bug has been there even before For Rent, so as stated, it is NOT necessarily being caused by For Rent, though obviously For Rent has been a major multiplying factor. If anything I feel my understanding of this is worse? If I believed it was just being caused by one pack, I'd have a fairly easy time just cutting that pack out. My concern is that this can happen to any legacy or detailed save file player, regardless of whether they have For Rent or not.
I'm sorry to hear about your save file, and I genuinely hope that this is resolved soon.

Sorry, i didn't mean "nice" as an insult, just a word, i also could have said good. It did imply that players could somewhat control it though, by keeping their save file small.
This of course, does happens in long played saves with or without r-rentals, but that's not what this thread is about. r-rentals are directly corrupting the game, whether it is played or not, and no matter how long. If your save corruption is not caused by r-rentals, then you're not in the right thread. This one is specifically for problems caused by r-rentals.
Again, i'm not saying your problem isn't just as bad, but this isn't the right thread.
