Married couples become unmarried/partners after entering CAS

My sims got married, had all the marriage buffs. I entered create a sim via the custom tattoo option. Upon exiting CAS my sims got a pop up that they were now the partners of each other. They had to ...

when I enter CAS (no cheats or mods) it removes my Sims married status and makes them just partners. Then when leaving CAS (even if I’ve made no changes) the loading screen loads infinitely before I have to force close it.
