[Javelin Anti-Cheat] GameService.dll crashes with 0xC0000005

I am experiencing a reproducible problem when launching Apex Legends. The game stops at the “Starting Javelin Anti-Cheat” stage and sometimes the Javelin window simply disappears without showing an error message.

Windows Event Viewer shows that EA Javelin Anti-Cheat itself is crashing during startup.

The important details are:

  • EAAntiCheat.GameService.dll: 3.10.1.0
  • Exception code: 0xC0000005 (Access Violation)
  • Faulting module: EAAntiCheat.GameService.dll
  • Faulting offsets observed:
    • 0x378CE4B — reproduced in two separate launch attempts
    • 0x388791C — reproduced in another launch attempt
  • Windows Error Reporting identifies the application as EA Javelin Anticheat.
  • After GameService crashes, EAAntiCheat.GameServiceLauncher.exe also crashes with 0xC0000005.
  • The EA Anti-Cheat service subsequently fails to start:
    • Event ID 7009 — service connection timeout after 90 seconds
    • Event ID 7000 — EAAntiCheatService failed to start with error 1053

One particularly important observation is that the latest crash occurred during the Anti-Cheat startup stage, before the game could launch. The WER report for this crash shows that the loaded modules were primarily the EA Anti-Cheat DLL and standard Windows system DLLs; Steam Overlay was not loaded in this crash.

I have already performed hardware stability testing. OCCT CPU, Memory, and CPU+RAM tests completed without errors. The EA Anti-Cheat service configuration has also been checked and its executable path, startup type, and LocalSystem account are normal.

I also tested with Steam Overlay disabled, but the Anti-Cheat crash still occurred.

This issue started after a recent EA Javelin Anti-Cheat update. Because the crash consistently occurs inside EAAntiCheat.GameService.dll with 0xC0000005, I would appreciate it if the development team could investigate whether there is a compatibility or initialization issue with the current Javelin Anti-Cheat version.

I can provide the Windows Error Reporting logs and Packer crash dumps if needed.

Thank you.

I have tried resetting my computer and uninstalling the updates, but neither of these solved the problem.

  • "If you have already resolved the issue, please let me know how you did it. Thank you!"

  • My game encountered the exact same issue as yours. I suspect it's a conflict between Microsoft's September patch and EA's new anti-cheat. You can try uninstalling the recently installed Microsoft patch starting with KB512, then reinstall EA anti-cheat, verify the game files integrity once more, and finally launch the game to test it.

  • On October 6, I reproduced four additional Javelin crashes within about 15 minutes. All four crash addresses resolve directly inside EA's anti-cheat modules: three in EAAntiCheat.GameServiceLauncher.dll and one in EAAntiCheat.GameService.dll. The latter reproduces the previously observed +0x388791C faulting offset.

  • After Apex successfully launched once, the system later BSODed while the game was idle in the lobby. The crash was BugCheck 0xA (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). The triage dump shows eaanticheat.sys code addresses in the saved kernel stack, while the immediate fault occurred in ntoskrnl.exe during a memory probe operation.
