Atm the only way to get a heirloom, is to open a lucky apex pack in game which contains 150 shards, which can then be used to purchase a heirloom.
If you have not opened a lucky pack containing shards by the time you have opened 500 apex packs, you are guaranteed a heirloom when you open the 500th pack.
It is a costly venture, apex packs are bought with an in game currency called Apex Coin. To avoid any issues it is probably best to buy the Apex coin in your sons account.
Sometimes there are events with pack offers, but not atm.
