Re: Huge fps drops on high end laptop

@loserito8 So it is throttling but having a similar laptop as yours my laptop cpu regular sits in to 80-100c range only downclocking slightly. Gpu usually stays around 80c, It may be due to thermals but could be something else entirely, usually you would see a steady decline in Mhz not a massive drop as you were saying.

Have you tried changing the power settings around, you could try running on high performance, I used to have a laptop that would do a similar thing as yours and changing from balanced fixed it. It could also be a bios issue I would google your model and see if anyone else if having similar issues.

Hey , thanks for the feedbak !

I tried capping my fps to 90, then 70. I still get the drops (maybe slightly less often ? not sure).

Couldn't find the fan configuration in the bios. I do have something like that in Asus Armoury Crate though, that allows me to push the fans to the max. Had to uninstall it a few months ago because it was affecting my general perfomances, but I'll give it another go.

What's bothering me is: why did it start dropping all of a sudden a few days ago ? Everything was working great before that. Never monitored my temps, but as someone mentioned, most computers likes those run very hot, and they can still run games without problem. Is it because the thermal paste got worn out super fast (the computer is only 6 months old !) ? Or could it have something to do with the holo-day bash update ?

  • Can you try running another game? That would help to figure out if it's isolated. At this point I'll just list off a bunch of things I would try in your situation, Disable Anti virus temporarily while playing game, try putting something under your laptop to keep it propped up so it can take in air, go to Asus website and download all the intel chipset drivers and pretty much anything related to gpu/cpu, power settings on high performance, If you have geforce experience turn off in game overlay and whisper mode, turn off windows game mode and game bar. Finally try updating the bios from newest version on Asus website.

I'm running out of ideas since it seems most of it has been mentioned, Laptop issues can be an absolute pain to address, hopefully one of those helps.

  • Can you turn off G-sync? G-sync sometimes have compatibility issues.

Most thermal pastes worn off in 6 months but this time can be longer if the thermal paste is higher quality. Usually recommended renewing time is between 6-12 months.

As for now your problem seems to be overheating. You have mentioned that when you plug a monitor to your laptop, no drops occur because (if v-sync is on) PC caps FPS to monitor's Hz. With 48 FPS it much likely won't heat up and cause these drops. Still there are two problems:

    1) When CPU&GPU reaches their temperature limits, the system decreases power in order to cool them. BUT your system immediately cuts their power and FPS drops to the bottom. Normally power should be decreased slowly.

    2) You shouldn't get FPS drop of overheating when video settings are low. Problem might be worn off thermal paste or not properly working fans.

Maybe you can contact Asus Support and let's see what they say.

  • Cheap thermal paste can wear out faster if sustained under really high temps.

I suggest only using bios fan profiles as software can be tempermental.

If you disabled vsync then it could have caused it to escalate to this, or it could be dirt/ dust in your laptop fans.

If your laptop if dirty in that way turn it off and use a vaccum against the air intakes and exhausts.

If Asus support was not much help and you are comfortable replacing thermal paste; i can suggest some TIM.

    Hello everyone

    So i bought this laptop 3 days ago , it a asus rog zephyrus s gx535gx with a rtx 2080 max-q and a i7 8750h and it completly *...

I average 50 - 70 fps on PUBG and Cod Warzone...

    Both are on low graphics

I triyed everything possible (all the thing you mentionned on this topic) : updated my drivers (with geforce experience), put the turbo mod ON (with Armory app), changed setting on "prioritize maximum performance"... nothing changed...

I know i don't really help with my comment but it more like a advice for everyone looking to buy this laptop... don't to this mistake !!

I bought it for 2000$ and i will get a refund to get a deskop computer with better settings (rtx 2080 super and i7 9700 k)

And by the way it not normal to do some changes on the laptop to get the performance normally we should have.... terrible move by Asus on this...
