It may be the case @matthew3333 that your network simply is not strong enough to allow both of you to play at once. 

Are you both playing over wifi? Best thing to do is disconnect all other devices from your network and have one of you tried using an ethernet cable and the other on wifi. 

Your ISP may also be able to help you improve your connection or offer advice on what to do.
