EA App suddenly stopped opening on Windows 11

Hi everyone,

About two days ago, the EA App suddenly stopped opening on my computer without any apparent reason. Until then, I was able to play my games normally, but now, when I try to launch the app, nothing happens — no error message, and the interface doesn’t show up.

What I’ve tried so far:
Ending all EA-related processes in Task Manager and trying again
Adding an exception in the antivirus and even disabling it
Running as administrator
Changing compatibility settings
Running EA App Recovery and EA App Update
Submitting a report using EA Error Reporter (I have the ticket ID)
Completely uninstalling and reinstalling the EA App
Rolling back the latest Windows updates

Still, the issue remains. Interestingly, the EA App appears as a running process in Task Manager, but the interface never loads. Even when trying to launch a game directly from its shortcut, neither the game nor the EA App starts.

Additional info:
Windows 11, version 24H2, build 26.100.3624
I work in IT and have technical knowledge, I’ve tried many solutions before reaching out here.
No system changes or suspicious installations occurred between the time it was working and when it stopped.

I honestly don’t know what else to do. If anyone has faced this issue or knows of a fix, I’d really appreciate your help!

I also encountered a similar error, and after trying many methods, the one that worked for me was: Sometimes, a faulty environment variable causes the game to get stuck in incorrect configuration → Open Windows, search for "Environment Variables," and delete the variable named "GAME_DATA_DIR" if it exists, then restart. I'm not sure if this will be useful for everyone, but it worked for me.

This issue remains UNRESOLVED with no communication from EA despite multiple posts from myself and others about it.

The EA App will not launch, it crashes without even the option to log in, just shows 'EA Crash Reporter' in the task manager. This has been happening since November 2025.

    What I have tried:

    1. Reinstall/Repair App/Clear Cache
    2. Contact EA Support (useless, don't bother they can't fix it)
    3. Contact Microsoft Support (say its a problem with EA)
    4. Clean Boot
    5. Modify Firewall/Security Settings
    6. Update Windows 11 & Drivers
    7. Compatibility Unicode-8 thing mentioned in other threads
    8. New user account
    9. Reinstall Windows

The only (temporary) fix I have found so far have been a new user account and reinstalling Windows. Works temporarily but the problem resurfaces within weeks/months, like I said this has been ongoing since November.

The situation I am now in is that I have paid this company THOUSANDS and cannot access my games unless I wipe my PC or make a new user every few months/weeks because we are held hostage by their unnecessary launcher that DOESN'T WORK.

Every other App, gaming or otherwise works perfectly, I have no issues with anything EXCEPT the EA App therefore the logical conclusion is that something has gone wrong with your App and you have made no efforts to communicate or fix it despite multiple reports from many people on these forums.

Can someone from EA please respond regarding these crashing issues, there are many posts about it and they go unanswered. Thanks.

Happened to me again today out of the blue even though it was working last night. Last thing I did that fixed it was reinstalling Windows, I'm not doing that again. No issues with any other apps or programs on my system except this one. EA_Leeuw do you have any updates on this 11 month old thread so we may play our games again?

    Hi everyone,

Thanks again for all the detailed troubleshooting you’ve shared.

If the EA app launches on a newly created Windows user account but not on your original one, that confirms the installation itself is working, and the issue is isolated to the Windows user profile.

Before considering creating or migrating to a new profile, please try the following on the affected account:

    1. Clear EA app launcher cache only (safe step)

On the account where it fails:

    • Press Win + R
    • Type: %LocalAppData%\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop
    • Delete the EA Desktop folder only

This removes launcher cache/config files but does not remove your installed games or cloud saves.

Restart your PC and test again.

    2. Restart EA Background Service

    • Press Win + R
    • Type: services.msc
    • Locate EABackgroundService
    • Set Startup Type to Automatic
    • If stopped → Start
    • If running → Restart

    Reboot and test.

    3. Check for custom Environment Variables

    • Search for “Environment Variables”
    • Open “Edit the system environment variables”
    • Click Environment Variables
    • Remove any custom variables you may have manually added (for example GAME_DATA_DIR)

    Restart after changes.

    4. Clean Boot test (profile conflict check)

    • Press Win + R
    • Type msconfig
    • Under Services, check “Hide all Microsoft services”
    • Click Disable all
    • Reboot and test the EA App

If it works in a clean boot, a third-party service tied to that profile is interfering.

If the app continues to launch normally on a new Windows user but not on the original profile after these steps, that confirms the issue is specific to that Windows profile’s configuration. In that case, continuing to use a new Windows account or migrating your files to one may be the most stable long-term solution.

If you're still affected, please share:

    • Your Windows version + build
    • Whether EABackgroundService was running
    • Whether clean boot changed the behavior

    We’ll keep monitoring this thread.
