Unable to Receive Invites In app or in Overlay

I'm trying to play Split Fiction with my friend. I do not own the game but my friend does. I don't receive any notifications in the app or in the overlay. But I can invite other people to my demo... yay.

I have notifications enabled for in-game and in-app.
The fire wall is allowing all EA app traffic to come through.
I restarted the device after installing.
I am connected to the internet when I play. 
I've checked my privacy settings.
Made sure that the person I'm trying to play with isn't blocked.
Checked the forums and reddit for this kind of issue.
The app is updated.

My app cannot send out error reports via the reporting tool.
