I don't know how the ships will be obtained, but knowing that EA announced this whole new game mechanic out of no where leads me to believe that the decision was motivated by their bottom line. I'm sure everyone will get a tie-fighter or maybe an X-Wing, but it'd be hard to believe that they'll give us a ship like the Falcon without paying a penny.
As far as upgrading or "gearing" your ship, I'd think it would mainly revolve around credits. It would explain the amount of credit heists we've been getting and the huge scaling of rewards. I don't know the amount of credits it takes to level your toon to 80, but multiply that figure by 5 or maybe even 10. That'll be the price to upgrade your ship. Ultimately, creating an even bigger credit crunch.
I think ships should be something that takes a lon time and feels like an accomplishment once received. That being said, i don't think they'll require you to shell out cash for the best ones.
And if all it takes is credits to purchase ships, i'll be shocked. I think ships will require shards just like heroes.
It's all speculation. I didn't say that credits will be the way of unlocking ships. Credits will be the way to upgrade/gear ships (just like heroes). Money will be the way to unlock certain (or better) ships, just like heroes.
They're introducing a new concept in the same game we've been playing for months. What is it all fueled by? The answer is MONEY.
It's just good business.
