Sims 3 game keeps crashing when I want to start a new game

Hi, I just bought the Sims 3 starter today, but I keep getting crashes when I start a new game. I get an error that "the game stopped working" when the progress bar is around 20%. I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit and I've patched Sims 3 to version 1.55.

These are the games I have, all downloaded via Origin:

- Sims 3

- High-end loft

- Late night

- Master suite

- Outdoor living

- Date night

This is what I've tried so far (did everything from this troubleshooter http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps/td-p/714):

- Reinstall the game

- Delete my folder in Documents

- Start the game without DLC/expansions

- Set the .exe files to run in Windows 7/XP compatibility mode, and as administrator (if I don't do that, the game won't start at all)

- Added all the .exe files to the exclusion list of DEP

- Tried a torrented copy, same problem

- Tried different graphics drivers (Catalyst 13.8 beta2 and Catalyst 13.4)

I'm not running any virusscanners (except for Windows Defender).

Please help me fix this, it sucks that I bought many of the expansions but they all don't work ☹️

My DxDiag dump: http://pastebin.com/33fiAeXh

Edit: I just removed everything, only installed the base game, and that works (when I set TS3V.exe to win7 compat mode). After that, I installed my expansions and tried again... And as soon as I load my game, it crashes again.

someone will look at dxdiag when they can and will reply if they have a solution

  • Looks like you still have that beta driver on it now. Did you check if there's a completely new one ?

Did you try what happens if you turned all the options way down ?

According to this: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_System_Requirements your graphic card isn't the greatest but might run if the options are set to lower. Usually crashes on startup are not down to computer issues though (although something it is something hardware related).

Are you willing to try a third party tool ? There's a tool called crash log analyzer (just google).

It's not a magic tool that can stop the crashes but it can give an indication to where the error lies. Just copy the errors you get to the clipboard and post them here.

I'm not sure if I switched from beta to (older) stable before running dxdiag. Anyway, removed the drivers completely, ran drivercleaner to remove any remaining traces, and installed the stable version again.

By default the game starts with the lowest possible settings, so yes, I've tried that. But I have a HD6870 GPU, that's quite a good GPU. It runs Battlefield 3 on very high.

Installed it. At first I saw some errors that I dont have the latest version of the expansions, so I downloaded the sims 3 patch downloader and forced it to install the latest updates for all my expansions. Didnt fix the problem though.

OK, I'll check with Ford (creator of the tool). Not sure myself.

    Got an answer for you.

Seems there's something wrong with the graphic card/driver

    Suggestions (Quote FordGT90Concept)

Every single one faulted in the ATI (AMD) graphics driver. I'd do the normal routine:

    1) Make sure the GPU isn't overheating.
    2) Make sure the GPU is getting enough power under load.
    3) Update graphics drivers.
    4) Check if other games have problems; run FurMark and check for artifacts.
    5) RMA the graphics card.

Thanks. I set up a VMware virtual machine with Windows 7 and installed the sims 3 there. It works perfectly fine in Windows 7, so it appears like the issue lies in the Windows 8.1 preview, or in the graphics driver compatibility with Windows 8.1.

Thanks for your time! Hope the issue gets fixed though, I dont like playing games in a virtual machine.
