Sims 3 keep crashing on mac

I just picked up playing the game after a break of several years. Im playing on Sunset Valley, sometimes games going smoothly for hours, sometimes it crashes after 5min or 20 mins into game play. Recenty i was opening game stricktly into build mode and game was crashing immediately - i do have things in house inventory as im playing Lisa Bunch and she has Master Thief lifetime want.

I have the game with literally few expansions (generations, ambitions, late night, seasons, high end loft, diesel. when i had more game was constantly crashing) installed via EAapp on a Macbook. No mods or CC. Im playing on window mode, also on lowest graph settings, turned off snow or rain either. Memories and interactive loading screen are disabled. I have 64-bit version of the game.

So far I have tried:

  • save as instead of save
  • playing in a copy of the save
  • cleaning up folder “CurrentGame”, „Custom Music”, „Featured Items” etc
  • cleaning up all cache

i have MacBook Air 2020 Sequoia 15.3

1,1 GHZ Dual Core Processor Intel Core i3

Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536Mb

Memory 8Gb 3733 MHz LPDDR4X

is there anything else i could possibly do?

Additionally, were you playing this save when you had more expansions installed?  Removing an EP from an existing save can and will corrupt that save.  (Stuff packs are fine to remove, although you'll get missing objects warnings.)  The only way to play without an EP you were previously using is to start a new save.

Aside from that, would you be willing to add a few mods?  Whether they'd help depends in large part on the cause of the crashing—an in-game issue could be fixed with the right mod, while a graphics issue would not be.  If you don't want to use mods, that's fine, but it's worth asking.

firstly, thank you for the fast reply!

i did have enabled Advanced Rendering, i disabled it as you said. and i had enabled object hiding.

when i had all EP and Stuff pack installed i was playing on different lot, but the same save, i was uninstalling it one by one as i read somewhere they might be too „heavy” for my mac. i got missing object warning as i was using some stuff from buy mode, but not really playing the EP (i didnt own any pets, no one goes to university) but if this will help, i can start new save :)

i dont mind using mods if they will help with the game, honestly i wasnt using anything because i was worried game will keep crashing even more. can you recommend any mods that could help me?

  • 6vbonplh58b6  Please test a new save with this set of expansions.  As said, an existing save will be corrupted if you try to play it forward after removing an EP.

The mods in this post are all extensively tested and all work with the 64-bit Mac version of Sims 3.  I personally would never play without them.  The mods in the next two posts, I'd list as recommended rather than almost essential.  Feel free to ask more questions about any or all of them.

puzzlezaddicti got mods you recommended and it made huge difference with how game is running, im amazed.. but after 40min on new save game crashed ☹️

  • 6vbonplh58b6  Do you see a scripterror in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 with a time stamp that matches the crash?  If so, it might give you an idea of what triggered the crash.  Feel free to post it here, or better yet, you can take it to the NRaas site and ask for help.  I have some ability to read these files, but not at the level of the current NRaas developer or a couple other helpers there.

This only applies to a scripterror that was generated at the time of the crash or immediately before.  A file from when you initially loaded the game wouldn't be helpful here, as it's almost certainly unrelated and would likely be a simple correction log, a report of ErrorTrap doing its job.

If you're not sure when the game crashed, look for an xcpt file, which would have been created at the time of the crash.  So any scripterror roughly matching that time would be relevant.

There are plenty of reasons the game would crash that wouldn't generate a scripterror though.  In that case, were you playing with the laptop plugged in, or running from battery?  Is iCloud Drive running on your computer, and if so, is it syncing the contents of Documents?  You can check in System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud Drive Options; any folder checked off is being synced.  Please do NOT start syncing Documents & Desktop if you're not already doing so; this is simply a question of whether iCloud is in play already.

i will also post on Nraas, thank you for suggestion

about other things you were asking, yes I was playing on laptop pugged in, and iCloud is synced to Documents & Desktop

  • 6vbonplh58b6  This is a correction log, nothing to worry about and just ErrorTrap letting you know it's doing its job.

For the game itself, try playing with your computer offline.  You can sign into the EA App and put it in offline mode, then disable wifi before pressing Play.
