The other day I saw someone say EA has to release new content at a constant pace because "the game will slowly die off otherwise." First off, people are still happily playing the previous Sims games over a decade after any of them had new content added, so within this very franchise there's proof that people don't stop playing the minute new packs stop being released. Secondly, am I the only one who remembers when games-as-a-service weren't the norm? It was normal for games, even ones that did receive expansion packs, to eventually stop receiving new content and that was fine. It didn't suddenly mean the game was no longer worth playing.
I think Sims 4 has hit a point where it's simply not possible to maintain the release schedule EA demands without breaking the game- there's too much of it already to fully test, and if the pregnancy thing is any indication, even core base game features aren't being checked to make sure they're still working.
