Suggestions for if The Sims 4 ever wants to offer a subscription for its DLCs

While the current public stance of the development team seems to be that no subscription service for the DLC is being considered, I'd still like to offer some suggestions should such a system ever be tried to be implemented.

I'd suggest the following:

  • Keep the base game free and do not make it require a subscription
  • Still keep it so that you can buy DLCs individually from the EA & Steam store front directly
  • Make the Marketplace currency Moola also be able to buy DLC at an equivalent exchange rate
  • Give subscribers an equivalent amount of Moola monthly/annually to what they pay monthly/annually

With the last two points implemented, the system is more analogous to paying for a mortgage, which should be a lot more popular than a standard subscription system which feels more like renting. Basically being able to pay for DLC over time, while still being to enjoy/demo all of it.

Now, some may ask why a subscription for The Sims 4 should be more like a mortgage: The Sims 4 is not a live service game in the traditional sense. You can perfectly fine play the game offline and without updates, which is also why the illegitimate acquirement of DLC is probably higher than it should be.
As such, you have to offer some permanent value to the subscriber so that they continue to pay, just as mortgage payers continue to pay to finally some day call their home fully their own.

With such a system you would very likely have a much more positive reception from the community and also probably get more users to subscribe and for longer as they feel that get more out of it in the long run.

  • HI, EA team,

I’ve been playing The Sims for many years and I love the game so much. I had an idea that could benefit both players and EA.

What if there was a subscription service called “The Sims+” that gave players access to all kits, packs, and future releases? Similar to a streaming service model.

Many players cannot afford to buy every kit individually. A subscription option could make content more accessible while creating steady recurring revenue for EA.

It could offer both monthly and yearly plans, giving players flexibility while encouraging long-term subscriptions.

I believe many fans would love this option!

Thank you for creating such a special game.

  • Subscription services means we do not "own" our game. Right now, what I want is an OFFLINE iteration of the Sims. Luckily, I still can do that with Sims 2. I actually do not ever want to spend my money on a subscription for any games.

That means we would not "own" our game. I actually am wanting game studios to no longer offer the "games as a service" subscription model.

  • Pay to Own, for those who may not be able to drop that much money in one lump. But only if it is really an issue for those who can't buy packs as they can afford it.

I hate, hate, hate, all the money I put into app games that died, and I can't play anymore even offline. And the money I dumped into WoW (and I was an end gamer top 1-10 guilds on server and had some rare bling), just to have the game have an update/change that I can't revert or skip, it's no longer is the same game anymore, and I wasted so much on expansions (and subscription money) I can't do anything about.

I do actually agree, I also want to fully own a game/DLC and am personally not fond of subscription services normally.
The suggestion for this topic is precisely that you should be able to own your DLC after enough time, just like you would own a house after paying your mortgage instead of renting.

That EA/Maxis may want to offer a service for the DLC (wether you can call it a "subscription" or not) is just good economics, as the current situation is having to pay up around 1890 $ up-front if you want it all, which may lead a chunk of users to try to illegitimate get the DLCs. However, if they want to offer such a service, I want it to have some permanent value to the "subscriber".

A subscription would stop me playing the game forever. I prefer owning the game I'm playing. Also, they are moving kits to their new marketplace so they can get additional revenue through Simmers purchasing the in game currency. I don't think they are hurting for ideas to increase their revenue. I should imagine we'll get this "service" soon enough.

It isn't "good economics." It is forcing peopke to accept they do not own the game. The only way to own it is to have a hard copy in your hands. If Sims 4 were to stop being supported, I technically could still download and play the orginal base game and the first expansion because I own those both on disk. I know because I have downloaded them offline before.

Just to clarify: I do still want you to be able to normally buy the DLC from the EA or Steam store front. (Added that now to the OP, since it was my intention) I just wish that, if/when they implement a service for the DLC, that you can get an equivalent amount in DLCs (just as if you had bought them directly from a store front) to what you paid for the service, even after you stop paying for the service.

If that still doesn't satisfy your requirement for actually owning your DLC and you require to own it physically, then I think we will have to agree to disagree. Though, I can understand that perspective from a preservationist view since I do own a lot of physical media myself.
