This is and old post but I haven't seen a workaround and the bug is still around so here's mine :
- click on chest : put in inventory
- go outside the lot
- open inventory, click on chest: place in the world
You can now open the chest and take everything out to your inventory. Once it's empty, go back to your dorm and place the chest, everything you put in it stays accessible.
