It isn't possible when it is paused.
Regarding Game over were you perhaps playing a scenario?
Honestly, this SUCKS for you and your sims, but it's kind of funny... (LOL) Anyway, IDK what to say about this... But I agree with @jpkarlsen, were you playing with a scenario?

Move your Mods folder to the Desktop and delete localthumbcache.package. Then test the game in a new save.
If it works now check for updates to your Mods and CC. Add it back a little at a time while testing until you have found all that are broken. - Sketch79310 months agoSeasoned Ace
If you really want to know how your Sim died, you should probably load the save where it happened and choose another household. Travel to the lot where your Sim died and see if you can find the tombstone.Wait around for your Sim's ghost to appear and then ask the ghost how it died.
If you would rather just get your Sim back, restore an earlier save that was made before the death.
