Re: Game Data Incomplete, grey llamas, red and white sims, broken textures

Hi all,

I’m having a serious issue with my Sims 4 game (on Mac) where lots are loading with llama placeholders, Sims appear red-and-white checkered with question marks, and some lots show up as rainbow-colored boxes with question marks. I normally play with mods and CC, but I’ve already removed everything and tested the game in a completely clean state — the same problems are still happening. Even when I try to create a brand-new Sim in CAS, they appear checkered with missing textures and question marks, like the game can’t load basic assets.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Removed the Mods, Saves, and Tray folders
  • Deleted localthumbcache.package and other cache files
  • Repaired the game using the EA App
  • Renamed the Sims 4 folder to let the game generate a fresh one
  • Fully uninstalled the game and manually deleted leftover files from Applications and Library
  • Reinstalled just the base game with no saves, no custom content, and no mods

Even with a clean install and a brand-new save, the issue is still there. At this point, I’m not sure if it’s a deeper installation issue, something cloud-based, or account-related. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice? I’d really appreciate any help.

Interesting you think it may be cloud based, how so? Saved game data is local and the game installation is local.

What leftover game files in Applications and Library did you trash? Uninstalling the game through EA App does a good job of thoroughly getting rid of all game installation files. Have you manually reset and uninstalled/reinstalled EA App? I've moved your post to the master thread and this is explained in the opening post.

It sounds like your installation is constantly corrupting which would indicate a hard drive issue. Where is your game installed? Which Mac do you have? Which OS are you running?

So last night, I completely uninstalled the game and re-installed it and it fixed the issue. I thought it was cloud based because I keep the files in the documents folder in my icloud drive, not on the disk. So I also moved the game files onto the the actual documents folder on the disk. I have the IMac desktop and i am running the most recent OS.

And now even after fixing the game and it working last night, I am trying to play it now and i am getting the application not responding message. It's been doing this constantly since the EA App came out. I love this game, but as a mac user, I can't even play it when I want to.

With iCloud Drive syncing your Desktop & Documents folders, your Documents folder will still be local as long as you have internal storage space free. Once it is full you'll run into issues as it will then only be in the cloud and the game won't be able to see it. It's all explained here - [READ FIRST] Saves, CC/Mods or Library items disappeared? iCloud issues | EA Forums - 10979712

So you now don't have iCloud Drive syncing your Desktop & Documents folders anymore and your Documents folder is local?

Please be specific. Apple > About This Mac. You could have any iMac from the last 13 years and running the most recent OS that machine can run, not the current version of macOS. While you're there, click on More info and scroll to the bottom of the System Settings window that opens to see how much disk space you have free.
