@LinneaRB Sounds frustrating. There are a few things that I would try (IF the household limit of 8 is not the issue, as @burin077 mentioned):
- Repair the game:
Open Origin, click 'Game Library' then right-click Sims 4 > Repair Game.
- Reset the sim:
https://sims4.crinrict.com/en/2014/09/how-do-i-reset-my-sim-and-what-does-that-do/ - If you have mods or CC, try removing them and see if this fixes it. if It fixes the situation you can re-add one at a time to see which one was conflicting with the function/causing the glitch.
Go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods - Delete cache:
