You just need some Mermadic kelp. It is already explained how to get it in this thread. The easiest is with reward points.

@jpkarlsen And that’s fine when that’s the story I want to play - especially starting young, and sending them to search the cave throughout teenage years so there’s a good chance they’ll have found the kelp while still teen or young adult. But if the story you wanted to play is that they’re a born mermaid, for example, it would just be nice to be able to switch it in CAS if for whatever reason they weren’t created that way. Even if it’s only in full edit mode / initial household creation. That’s all the point of this thread is - not that there’s no possible workaround, but that it would be nice if occult was a setting in CAS rather than an unchangeable starting point.
Or what if you download a Sim from the gallery, and then go “shoot, they’re a werewolf. I just wanted a normal Sim.” Sure, you can play out the story of looking for a cure - but maybe that wasn’t the story you wanted to play with that Sim. 🤷🏼♀️

@PipMenace , I forget to do this more often than I would like to admit! 🤦♀️😅 I also often tend to forget to marry my 2 Sims in CAS! It is such a pain! 😓
