Experiences with Pets & City Living Apartments?

I'm curious what people's experiences are with keeping pets in CL's apartments. I imagine cats are pretty straightforward but dogs might be another story. So far I've been having a hard time potty training a puppy in my apartment. My sim REALLY didn't wanna carry him back upstairs for whatever reason and I had to resort teleporting him back upstairs. Not sure if that's an issue unique to me or not. A bit tedious so far!
  • It's not been much different than having them in houses for me. I usually just have the owners take the dogs for a walk and have them do their business when the need arises. But I've never had puppy in an apartment, only adult dogs. If your sim won't carry the puppy back up, I think you can just call for them and they'll come up.

d'oh. I didn't even think to try calling him back upstairs! whoops. I aged him up so her two dogs are pretty manageable now despite her small apartment. luckily I've got a mod that lets them leave to a rabbithole for their walks and come back with their business complete. it's not so bad now since they're adults. I can't imagine trying to raise a whole litter in here, it'd be a nightmare I think.
  • It depends which apartment. Some of them cause dogs to route fail when asked to go potty when they are inside the apartment (works fine in the hallway). However potty training does work in some of the apartments, so your issue sounds like you are living in one of the non-working ones.

One of the things I do is buying the newspaper rug (even though that doesn't work), teach the dog to heel, and then encourage the dog to do their business on the newspapers.

Tell my sim to usually tell them to go potty or let them out if they don't leash them to do it, usually they'll go do it out on the side walk. I've had townies walk through my dog's business and it's pretty hilarious actually. Only tried this in the apartments in the spice market district thus far.

i will say that cats are very straightforward in the apartments, yes. i've only got one san myshuno sim with a pet and it's a cat, so no experience with dogs there. the cat is in the spire apartment (the three story one that kind of feels like it should count as a penthouse) and i have a feeling that one might be perfectly fine for dogs, since it's got a balcony they should consider 'outside' for doing their business (...your sims being happy with that might be another story, of course)

...i will also mention that if you do put pets in apartments with balconies, be wary of putting woohoo bushes on said balconies or you'll have pets with constant squirrel scratch fever (same as having pets and woohoo bushes together on any residential lot, really)

those bushes haunt my dreams since I play so many families that reside in Windenburg. their cats go CRAZY for em. needless to say our vet bills leave something to be desired. . . and yeah unfortunately this apartment doesn't have a balcony or allow me to make one. I wish we'd gotten a patch of fake grass that dogs would potty on when stuck indoors. alas! I'll eventually have to test out the balconies for potty time. it would definitely save me some time with all these walks.
  • For almost a year now there has been an issue where the dogs can't leave or enter certain buildings on their own. In my experience it has mostly been buildings in the financial district but there might be other apartments with the same problem. It saddens me a bit because I haven't been able to use my favorite building in SM since C&D was released.
  • I find it aggravating at times when I have to constantly bring the puppy down to the ground floor or call the grown dog down so that you can then tell them to do their business. At least after they're done, you can always call them back inside! Most apartment dwellers own cats instead.
