How I organize Showbiz

How are your famous sims doing? I wanna share how I organize my Actors, Writers and Musicians. This involves the Get Famous EP, but is not limited to. As usual, 50% of my game is pure imagination :) I do make up films and books that never actually had a gig in my game.

Lately I've been focusing a bit extra on showbiz in my game. I found that sims in the Acting career often had quite low scores in related skills, as a result of me rarely following them to a gig. My Writers rarely had any fame at all, because after building their writer office and publishing their first book, I tend to leave them alone. I found that I miss good routines for pushing the creative sims up and forward. Most of them were simply ignored by me after getting heir first fame star.

So, I decided to improve this by organizing showbiz in a better way :)

Be warned, I normally get a bit detailed. Yet, you might get inspired, or sharing your own methods. In this thread I'll share tidbits as I keep developing this all. I figured there will be enough to run a separate thread. I'll focus on Actors, Writers and Musicians. In the future Comedians might be included with the acting talent agencies, don't think they are many enough to deserve their own agency, but they won't be given priority now.

Basically I made a system where each product (movie, commercial, book, released song/album) gets a success/quality score that is based on certain skills (by all involved) + a random factor (dice representing the unplanned, bad timing or advertising failures etc.). Actors will score by Acting x Charisma x Fame on the day of their gig. For a movie, Lead role count 3x, supporting role 2x and the Extra 1x. Similar for Authors and Musicians. This way the same artist will give better products as skills/fame builds.

So, why all this extra trouble? Because I wanted a way to decide the success of a given film or book. The casting becomes interesting because the more successful Leads, the better score. At the same time, involving a less experienced Supporting role might harm the success, because the total score might get lower.

Knowing a production's score, I also know if reviews are good or bad. Everyone wants good reviews, but then you certainly need a strategy. Judith Ward will never accept a role in a film featuring some unskilled Actor, because she would probably end up with a badly reviewed film on her CD. Every production company wants to rank high on those Top 10 lists.

I noticed that my many TV productions actually scored rather poorly! I never paid attention to those hosts, some actually have quite poor skills. And, say for a talk show, there will normally be a guest with no showbiz related score at all, dragging down the entire production's success score. With this system, Simmerville Studio's News Anchor since a decade actually got bad reviews for most jobs. This made me realize that I must focus more on his skills, as someone leading the TV News for a decade must have skills reflecting experience. There must have been a meeting at Simmerville Studio about having this guy replaced. Of course they keep an eye on the ratings! Also the host of the rather popular Simmerville Show, Fritz Mervil, scores poorly , but as he is the CEO of the production company, I guess he is safe - besides, some of his shows were saved by a superstar like Judith guesting :)

I also found that everyone performing on film or TV ought to be signed with one of the talent agencies. For the first time I took the time to learn  about their differences and specializing. I used to think those agencies were random, but no, there is a finally a talent routine in my game... more about that later.

Anyhow, this all makes for realistic consequences, the urge to build at least some skills, and a more interesting side of casting a production, too. Also my blog's gossips column will get a lot more gossips to dive into ;) I'll share more about this all as each involved company will release their new webpages this RL Winter. You'll find more about this in a while 😃

  • So, I'm dealing with anything from Plumbob Pictures to the many talent agencies as companies. Each f these - and a few more - is now getting a webpage with info on their productions as well as talents signed with them. Although the film business might be most interesting, I'm starting with the book publisher, Moon Books :)

You can  read about the company on my blog, so I'll not repeat all that here, but maybe you want to check out the book titles published so far by Moon Books, and also how the Authors are listed. The web page also includes the annual Top 10 Bestseller list. My Authors now have a registry where they can sign up and that later will push their activities as a build of related skills and a minimum of new titles will be expected.

Similar pages will be released for the film and TV production companies and talent agencies. It all helps me keeping track on both the talents and the productions. Judith, you were ruling the top alone way too long!

  • Simmerville!  I love how detailed you are in your simming. I admire it, in fact.  I also use a great deal of imagination when writing about my Cantrell family, particularly Erik. Up until this specific iteration of my Sim family, I would pretty much allow the game to call the shots, if you will. This time I decided the awards should be a tad more realistic. It is entirely feasible that Erik, rising to fame as quickly as he did (another unbeatable record, in my estimation) he should receive Best New Artist. He also managed a Clean Sweep on the Big Four.

I decided rather than have him license song after song, after song, for which he would attend the Starlight Accolades Show each week and win. I would do well to stagger them. I set aside the first Sunday of Spring, Summer and Fall for these top prestigious categories: Best New Artist; Song of the Year; Record of the Year; Album of the Year.

As it happened, I was playing 7-day seasons for the first time, which granted Erik the Clean Sweep, but also messed up my timeline. I have been viewing a college Term as 1-year.  Oops.  Alas, I am never wholly error-free despite how I plan. LOL

To recover from my blunder, I sent Erik on his first World Tour after he graduated from Britechester-U. Since he was only seventeen years old (in my mind), he was still too young to marry his sweetheart. Plus, he is still at odds with her overbearing father. Mind you, the kid is rolling in Simoleons, but he's also a Rocker and sadly, that's what Captain Golden sees.

Thanks for this outlet. As you can see, I'm not as detailed as you. I look forward to reding how others play.

Thanks for sharing! I envy your dedication to Erik's fab career. It sounds like a lot of fun.

I never thought of arranging an Award show myself. I normally miss the thing because of my rotation, and I recently noticed that most of my artists hardly got any trophy at all. I might do that, set up a show to change this. So far I made some of them have Meet & Greets just top collect trophies :) I guess I should cheat by grabbing a few from the debug catalog, especially for the global stars who obviously got a few awards in the past.

  • These days all media producing companies as well as the many talent agencies get more focus in my game, and today the Plumbob Pictures' webpage went public. It gives me the oportunity to rant a bit about how my Actors can get casted for a job in a big film :)

Plumbob Pictures is the biggest producer, located in Del Sol Valley. In my universe they produce two big movies for the silver screen every year, and they are of course picky when it comes to the cast. Because of my system of each person involved somehow affecting the reviews based on their skills and fame and a random factor, PP will normally go for the well established and experrienced names, both for leads and supporting roles. You might be lucky to be credited as an Extra, but even then they prefer experienced Extras. The casting will normally be handled by Well Suited Talent Agency, which is the agency for Actors with minimum 3 fame stars. They will of course not sign with Extras, so they will cooperate with one of the other agencies for any roles but leads.

The road from being totally fresh to being considered for a PP production is long. Not only will you need certain skills and some fame, but you should also be seen in minimum one previous production that achieved pretty good reviews - and as reviews are based on all the credited cast (in my case, normally 3-6 sims), it might be hard to get good reviews from participating in smaller productions where the superstars are not involved.

It is all connected. In my game, some might start their career on the TV format as it is easier to get noticed if you do well. PP produce commercials, but hardly anything else for TV, but Simmerville Studio does, and their page will be released next.

On PP's webpage you'll find info on the company, their catalog with many of their former productions (and, yes - I create unique film posters for most of them), the latest Top 10 Film & TV list, news on upcoming productions and a lot more.

    Direct link: Plumbob Pictures webpage.

Also check out my blog Simmerville Sims for related stuff :)

  • I mentioned creating posters for some of the imaginary film productions. Here is an example. This is Judith Ward dressed up as the lead character of the first movie she (officially) directed herself called "Killing my Shadow". A trailer promoting this film was shown on the Simmerville Show, show #3 - with Judith guesting the show #4. With more focus on showbiz, I think there will be Actors guesting that show in the future :)

Wow, posters written in Simlish. I am quite impressed. Love it.

Well, I wouldn't dream of creating anything like a poster and not use Simlish. I don't use un-Simlish numbers either. It annoyed me so much that EA used normal numbers for those pretty street number signs we got with Lovestruck. In my eyes normal numbers jump out as something breaking the immersion.

  • While Plumbob Pictures might be the huge thing, the great producer for the silver screen, and the dream of any actor out there - I also have another production company, Simmerville Studio. They produce for TV, which works slightly different than the Acting and PP gigs etc. I need to pretend there are plenty of TV content produced, but occasionally I actuallly create the TV-series, news, talk show and reality show. Most of this content can be found on my Youtube chanel, but now there is also a full catalog with links for streaming, on the new web page.

Simmerville Studios is located in my Gloomville (your Willow Creek):

With my new scripted system, details on a lead role or a supporting role will also be listed on that sim's bio page, as a life line event, and on their profile with the talent agency where they are currently signed (coming soon). And, news from all showbiz companies will be found in my online newspaper Mazaloom Times. Btw, this also includes the Royal Palace Office and Church of Similius, which are not really showbiz, but pretty close :).

During the process of redefining my showbiz routines, I got aware that most of my sims with lots of experience from TV-productions, actually lack most skills that would give their "contribution score" for rating the productions they contribute to. I mean, the News Anchor since 10-ish years hardly knows there exist skills like charisma, acting, and research & debate. A certain CEO who is hosting a rather successful talkshow scores extremely low on skills, too. This is because I create those videos "on the side", besides nothing they do during the recording would build their related skills anyway. Topping this, the popular host has zero fame, neither has that news anchor... They should of course be recognized on the street. Because TV-productions fight for a good rank, just like motion pictures, this will need to be dealt with. It forces me to play the actors and TV-faces more often.

Because the game has no such Top 10 Film & TV-productions, I programmed my own to be updated annually:)

Another detail I got aware of, and which actually makes perfect sense, is that talk shows now get reviews based on their guests. Having Judith Ward guesting the show brought up the ranking for that episode, while a show with mostly "normal residents" would get terrible reviews. So - in the future I guess I'll need to pay more attention when casting those guests. A mix is probably the best, as always :)

This probably sounds too detailed and tedious, but it's how I play my game. When routines are good, the extra work load normally gets small.

Well, now that Simmerville Studio is online (page released today), it is possible to read a bit about both the big production companies. There exist one more smaller company focusing mostly on commercials, and another producing concerts etc, but their webpages will need to wait. Because, in a few days the webpages of 4 talent agencies will have my attention.

  • When a new movie or TV-show premiers, the production will normally be advertised all over my worlds. I try to adjust the advertisements once every sim year, so it will mainly be the bigger events that get this extra attention, and not the short lived, or the ever lasting (TV news). A new Judith Ward movie will almost always get publicity. It's of course a big thing when a new Actor gets their face on a movie or concert poster for the first time.

Creating the poster makes it easy to also add the image to a CC version of the wazzup city board. It then comes into rotation on any such board object placed by me, but it also effects those objects already being placed on pavements/outside lots by EA (might be San Myshuno, only). In addition I have the posters on wall at the 8 Recreation Centers and outside misc venues where it might be natural hanging such posters. Pubs and bars will often welcome posters.

I was happy to see that the city living board object that is in the arrival area outside city flats, get its images from the same source as the wazzup board, meaning my custom posters will also be displayed outside the flats :)

I also have a custom version of the huge wall mounted city board, used for larger productions, only.

There are even more ways in my game for famous sims to get promoted. Saving some of this for when we get to the Musicians :)

Do you ever advertise your Actors and Musicians?
