Pet Genetics

I've been trying to test out the pet genetics but I'm not really getting the results I'd like. Apparently custom/painted coats don't actually mix with each other or presets, they just seem to swap. I painted two poodles in the hopes of seeing marking variety in their offspring but alas, the game just switches between the two coats which is rather disappointing. Also seems to get a little wild with the head and ear shapes despite them being the same breed albeit different cut coats. Part of me wonders if this is somehow on my end or if this is simply how it was intended.
  • I remember loving the pets in Sims 2 because genetics were awesome. This is pretty disappointing.

I bred a white and red Cavalier King Charles with a Newfoundland and just got a big newf with different features.. would have been kinda nice if it had ended up with some red undertones or something.
  • Yea, there is no layers of coats. You cannot mixes a rainbow pet and a spotted pet and get a spotted rainbow Puppy or cat. Or have one tail be striped and the other rainbow. Is is a bit disappointing.

It works the same way it does with human sims....the offspring get various parts from one parent or the other. Expecting them to somehow blend custom paint jobs on pets? That's not a very realistic expectation.

The pets don't look exactly like their mom or dad either...they get a mix of features from each...for example, they may get their ears from their mom and their tail from the dad.

Yeah, I get that some of the features can mix, which is good. Unrealistic expectation though? I'm guessing you didn't play previous installments of Sims Pets, because in the Sims 3 Pets you could have crazy colored/patterned parents and the offspring would be a mixture. It was fun not knowing exactly what their coats would look like. So they have made this possible before, however maybe it's harder for them to do with Sims 4? I get that it's not true to life, but this is a game and it was just one of my favorite parts of the Pets expansion previously.
  • These are my first examples of pet genetics. The father is displayed on the left, the mother on the right, and the baby in the middle.

How about if EA MAXIS makes the CAS for crossbreeding a dog and cat & get a doggish cat?
  • I have noticed that when messing with the genetics in CAS, I would, occasionally, very rarely get a different color between two pets. For example, I kept randomizing kittens between a bengal cat and a siamese and I got a solid tan kitten. Otherwise, they had bengal coats or siamese coats. I am disappointed that the genetics don't mesh, in dogs, however, the genetics seem to be a bit more active. When doing the same with two different dogs, the puppies coats would all come out different. I goy a brindle pup out of a Saint Bernard and a boxer. The dog, which i added to my family when I made it, looks like a SB, but is brindle and white.

The brindle was probably a boxer coat variation. Like when you select the breed and some have different coats to choose from.

So far my dog has had 3 puppies. 2 of them are completely a mesh of both parents and they very nice the 3rd is a mesh of her dad. Even though shes got a lot of her dads features she still looks like a mesh of them both.
