Lots not saving properly

Mac, Sequoia 15.5

When attempting to save my game in The Sims 4, the game appears to save normally without errors, but no progress is retained. After closing and reopening the game, all progress is gone, and the save file reverts to a previous state.

Expected Result:

The game should retain progress and load the updated save.

Actual Result:

No progress is saved; the game loads the older state as if no save had occurred.

Troubleshooting Tried (Didn't fix the issue):

  • Repaired game via EA App
  • Removed all mods/CC (tested in a clean mods folder)
  • Removed all mods affecting the Data/Delta Folders
  • Deleted all cache files
  • Restarted Mac
  • Tried all variations/options of saving the game
  • Tried installing the newest 5th-September Update
  • Tried turning off the iCloud Settings "Desktop & Documents Folder" and "Optimise Mac Storage", then renaming the "The Sims 4" Folder under Documents to trigger generating the same, but a new, clean folder/game. (This did fix my issue for like 5 minutes, now I'm having the saving issue again)

I always load back into the game at the same location, place a base game bush, load out, and then reload the save. It always disappears. The issue isn't with the bush mesh, though, since only the newly placed one is deleted, and this also happens with entirely new interiors, different lots/types of progress, etc.

Additional Notes:

  • The game does not display any error message during the save attempt
  • The Issue persists across multiple sessions and attempts
  • The Issue started occurring upon installing the August 2025 Update

    NEVERMIND :((

Just loaded back in, and it looks like my progress didn't save again. Strangely, the bush I placed earlier is still there this time (=the method I used to test my issue with), but the renovation I worked on afterwards (over the last 4 hours) is gone. Meaning the issue still persists, but it did manage to make one save from 4 hours ago.

Alright. Let me grab the better exceptions log.

    ........................................................
    Edit: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1N1JSVxkIciYchJn6jwyihlXRqwaiDIb1?usp=sharing

I'm unable to run a better exception as my game doesn't respond to the pop-up. I do have some random files in my "The Sims 4" Folder, though, and while I tbh don't know what they are and why they automatically got there, I put them into the Google Drive Folder.
Regarding the saves, I don't know which save is which, but since they're all named as monthly back-ups, just go with the "July" one.

When trying to get the exception, I noticed that I got the currently widespread bug of being unable to load into a household: When I have a big household (or with sims not currently on the lot), my game's Ui gets messed up and freezes. When it's a single sim that is on the lot, my game goes into a loading screen and ends popping back into manage worlds without an error code. (I saw somewhere on here that it's caused by mods, so I'll go through lists of unsupported/broken mods in the meantime and sort them out.)
Additionally, my uploading builds gallery doesn't work as well. But that's an issue I had a long time before already.

Okay, I followed your advice; I renamed my Sims4 folder, let a new one generate, then moved my saves/tray/Mods over. And it works perfectly now!! The saves I make now actually keep their progress when I reload them. Issue fixed.

Thank you so, so much for your help and patience with me. + You had really good instructions everywhere! When I submitted the bug report, I honestly didn’t expect anyone to see it, so I’m beyond grateful that you did and took the time!!

Yes :) Can you start with a clean TS4 folder again by renaming your current Die Sims 4 folder, launching the game to the main menu so a new one is created then quit, don't bother saving. If it loads to the main menu move one of the saves in the folder you renamed into the newly created saves folder then again try to launch the game. If it doesn't load, please copy/paste any contents of LastCrash or LastException files here and upload your save somewhere and PM me the link so I can test it.

Yes, I did duplicate some files earlier today, rather poorly, just a few hours before running the terminal. I didn't realise that it would affect my game, so thanks a lot for pointing that out. I've now moved those files back into my Documents / Electronic Arts / Die Sims (Yes, I play in German) / saves folder, removed the .ver files and tested the game again to see if the saving issue still happens ... and it does. I wasn't really expecting a different result, though (given the time of making that duplication).

Is that what you wanted me to try?

Got it, thanks 🙂 The game will only load saves that are directly in the Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves folder. To breakdown your Terminal output:

These files are in a folder called sims 4 saves backup which is in a folder called I. MacBook on your Desktop. The game will not load these because they are not in the Documents > Electronic Arts > Die Sims 4 > saves folder. If you move these into the saves folder they should load into your game:

    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000005.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000009.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000b.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000008.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000004.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000003.save

    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000006.save

These are backups of those saves:

    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000004.save.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00000009.save.ver0

These are duplicate files macOS has added numbers to because at some point you, or iCloud, has tried to move them to the sims 4 saves backup folder where files with the same name already exist (you can check against the filenames above):

    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 2.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 3.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 4.ver3
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 4.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 8.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 2.ver3
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 6.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 2.ver4
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 5.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 2.ver3
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 2.ver4
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 6.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 2.ver2
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 5.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 4.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 7.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 3.ver1
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_0000000d.save 4.ver3
    /Users/X/Desktop/I. MacBook/sims 4 saves backup/Slot_00001115.save 2.ver1

    All of the files in:

    /Users/X/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Desktop/macbook/sims 4/saves/

are in your iCloud Desktop folder.

    All of the files in:

    /Users/X/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4 Legacy Edition/saves/

are in your iCloud Documents folder and relate to the older Legacy version of the game.

    All of the files in:

    /Users/X/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/

are in your iCloud Documents folder and relate to the current version of the game, not Legacy. The game will not load these because they are not in the Documents > Electronic Arts > Die Sims 4 > saves folder. You have a mixture of saves, backups, and again files where the OS has added numbers to the filenames due to duplication.

These files should successfully load into your game provided you are still playing in German:

    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000005.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000009.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_0000000b.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000008.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000004.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_0000000d.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000003.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000002.save
    /Users/X/Documents/Electronic Arts/Die Sims 4/saves/Slot_00000006.save

If you are playing the game in another language, English for example, the game will then create a folder called The Sims 4, not Die Sims 4, in Documents > Electronic Arts and your saves should be moved into that saves folder.

I tried multiple times sending it here, but I fear this site isn't made for long texts, so please try to access it through a Google document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dcBnXvghz5fpXPmzQH4Wsand0a3si45EoHzyArFO5E/edit?usp=sharing

Let's do a proper comprehensive search of your Mac. Please open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and copy and paste this at the command prompt then hit Enter:

    find / -type f -name "*Slot_*" 2>/dev/null

It will take a while. When the command prompt reappears it has finished. You should see a list of output. Please copy/paste the results here. You can replace your user account name with an X or something, I don't need to know that information.

Hi! Thank you so much for trying to help; I really appreciate it.
Basically, I checked and confirmed that my iCloud storage is full (200GB/200GB), which also matches the time frame when the issue started appearing (full a week before). My "Desktop & Documents Folder"-option was already unselected, but I hadn’t checked off "Optimise Mac Storage" until I followed your guide, and I have now done so. My MacBook storage lies at 379/500GB, so I have about 120GB of free space.

However, despite multiple restarts and attempts with my Sims 4 game, the issue still persists despite that fix.

(Transparently, I'm unsure what you meant by step 6 of your guide, as my folder "Electronic Arts" stayed in the Documents folder where it's supposed to be without being removed, so that I might have done something wrong, I'm not sure.)

See the opening post in this master thread your post has been merged into. If you're still having issues saving after checking and disabling iCloud please post back here.
