[MAC] S4 Update Today for El Capitan

I have had quite a week trying to play Sims 4. Talked with 6 people on tech support, including a supervisor (their tech support used to be great, and now it is horrible.) after Origin would not open because it wanted to install a new helper tool. They told me to update to El Capitan for the issue to be fixed, and then it wasn't fixed after I updated, and they kept telling me to uninstall and reinstall Origin like 4 times, to no avail. Finally it just worked randomly. Then I could get into the game, but the game kept freezing or crashing while trying to load a family. After some research on the forums, I figure this issue means that Sims 4 doesn't like El Capitan very much? Spoke to someone on support today who assured me that there is an update coming today that will fix this. So, fingers crossed.

Has anyone else had this issue??? And why is their tech support so bad?!

Origin and Sims 4 do work fine on El Capitan but there are a few issues which could be causing problems. Were you running Mountain Lion before updating to El Capitan? There is a known issue with the latest Origin update and Mountain Lion. Please see this thread for more details. If you did update you must uninstall and reinstall Origin. When uninstalling Origin you have to get rid of every single residual file otherwise a new install will be useless. Please follow this guide on uninstalling it properly.

As for Sims 4 not performing properly, what Mac do you have? There is a known issue with some 2012 model Macs with NVIDIA 6xx graphics cards running El Capitan, please see the stickied thread on this forum for more details.

Thank you! I did completely uninstall Origin.

    I upgraded from Mountain Lion.

I got my MacBook Pro in 2012, but I have never had issues with the game until last week.

Origin wouldn't open, which is why I updated to El Capitan (tech support told me to.) That didn't fix it...It randomly started working after not working like 5 times.

Then the game finally opened, but freezes every time. I opened the game as a new user and was able to play for a while with no issues, until that started freezing and crashing too.

I'm on chat with tech support now and they are telling me to download C Cleaner. I'm so frustrated at this point...help?? Thank you!!

Do not use a 3rd party app. to 'clean up' your Mac.

Sorry to appear as shouting but they can cause more problems by deleting system files which can make your Mac unstable.

Updating to El Capitan would fix the Origin issue but will now render your game unplayable if you have one of the affected graphics cards. Please read this this stickied thread and see if your Mac has one of the GPUs mentioned.

Oh, and I meant ML in my original post, not Mavericks. Sorry for the confusion... ☹️

I did not download the C Cleaner...had a feeling it would be dangerous. Thanks for confirming that! I am so frustrated with the horrible tech support at EA!

    My Graphics info:

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

Is this one of the affected graphics cards?

Ok, I checked out the thread. I don't have greyed out windows or any issues with graphics that I can see...it's just the game crashing.

I trashed the options folder, and now I'm back to square one with the Origin issue! When I try to open the game it says, "there is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall." And then I get the "Origin needs to install a new helper tool..." for the first time since upgrading to El Capitan. What the heck?!

Oh no! The Options.ini file can't be related to the Origin issue as it's the video, graphics, camera, sound settings.

When you are entering your password after the Helper Tool prompt, is it hanging then asking you for it again? Can you try this fix in the main Origin forum?

Is your Mac the 13" or 15" MBP?

Hey, thanks for your help! I did try the fix in the Origin forum, as well as some fixes from other forums. It asks for my password and then just hangs. But sometimes the game starts but won't load past the loading screen. Once in a while it goes past the loading screen but crashes as soon as any house loads. This is my graphics card:

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB. I have the 15 inch MBP. I am wondering how it could be my graphics card, when I have been playing Sims 4 with no problem since May on the same computer with the same graphics card. What to do?!
