Re: Sims 4 Crashes Even After Crash Patch Update (Mac)

I've been running the game flawlessly on my (Metal capable) Mac on Ultra settings for years. With and without mods.

Since the update, launching the game causes a complete lockup and crash of my Mac resulting in a hard reboot.

Game launches, I click on New game, and it starts loading - spinning beachball, then hard lockup without error and Mac restarts.

It appears that the game is crashing my GPU:

Console shows a bunch of crash reports:

com.ea.origin.ESHelper_2020-11-26-054610_Mac-Pro.crash (x5)
OriginClient_2020-11-26-181141_Mac-Pro.wakeups_resource.diag
Kernel_2020-11-26-181732_Mac-Pro.gpuRestart (x20)

System.log:
Nov 26 18:17:38 Mac-Pro kernel[0]: Trying to restart GPU (AMD Radeon HD 7950)...
Nov 26 18:17:38 Mac-Pro WindowServer[209]: GPU Driver appears to be hung (over 5 continuous seconds of unreadiness)
Nov 26 18:17:40 --- last message repeated 208 times ---

Total reinstall/repair, created new EA/Sims folder, no mods.

I even tried installing Legacy Edition... same result.

I have done a complete, clean reinstall after removing ALL Origin and EA content from my hard drive. I did get a little further... I was able to get into CAS and create a sim... but as soon as I went to a lot, the game locked up my computer with a spinning beachball and I could not forcequit so I had to hard reboot the computer.

Can you please attach the Config.log file and any lastCrash reports from the Sims 4 folder?

There are no crash reports in the Sims 4 folder. Config.log attached.

The config log clearly shows that my GPU is supported, but the game is causing kernel panics by crashing my GPU.

My console shows The Sims 4 crashing my GPU (x20 log files), and com.ea.origin.ESHelper crashing (also attached).

Can you upgrade past El Capitan to at least High Sierra? El Capitan and Sierra have had significant problems running the game since the Metal update. High Sierra and later run a Metal v2 which is more stable. More info:

That is not an option for the machine that it's currently installed on.
If it won't run on El Cap, then EA needs to update the system requirements for the game:

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/the-sims/the-sims-4/the-sims-4-system-requirements/#mac

    Mac

These are the requirements for The Sims 4 base game, no expansions included.

    Minimum

    • Mac OS version: Metal required. macOS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
    • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz Processor or better
    • Memory (RAM): At least 4 GB RAM
    • Hard drive (free space): At least 15 GB of free space with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games.
    • Graphics card (video): NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro or better. Video RAM of 256MB or better.
    • Input: Keyboard and mouse
    • Internet connection: Internet connection required for product activation

My machine exceeds all of these requirements.
It was running flawlessly on El Cap before recent updates, so this was definitely caused by changes by EA, not Apple.
Also note: the so-called "Legacy" version doesn't seem to work because I have a 64-bit system.

    Very disappointing.

Yep, I agree but the solution is to update. If you can't, how about installing High Sierra or later on an external bootable and playing on that?

    @BearHugs1911

Have you disabled Origin in-game to see if that helps?

    Hi @Bluebellflora ,

yes I have. I tried about everything I could find. Seems this started around the time the skin tone update came out and I also had an origin update as well.

Yes, I have origin in - game disabled. I don't know. It started to work again and then out of no where, after the latest update, it crashed again. I can't even play it. At this point, the money I have invested in this game, its absolutely worthless. I have never had these issues prior to the snowy escape pack.
