Unrecognised Video Card Error - fix for Mac

This is a common error message which does not impact the game.

You can easily fix this yourself by following these instructions:

  1. Right click on the Sims 4 base game, wherever you have it installed (Applications folder by default) and select Show package contents
  2. Navigate to Contents > Resources
  3. Right click on the GraphicsCards.sgr file and select Copy
  4. Open the ConfigOverride folder in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Right click in the folder and select Paste item.
  5. Open the GraphicsCards.sgr file you have pasted into the ConfigOverride folder. If prompted to choose an Application in Finder, choose TextEdit.
  6. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the file to the Apple bit and paste the following lines:
vendor "Apple" 0x106B
    card 0x0000 "Apple M3" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M3 Max" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M3 Pro" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M2" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M2 Max" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M2 Pro" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1 Max" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1 Pro" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple A12Z" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
end

Close the GraphicsCards.sgr file, saving if prompted (you shouldn’t be)

I have written a more detailed article here.

  • Yes, I synced my iCloud drive and still nothing.

Here's a screenshot, I added in the very last line before "end"

What is your specific M2 chip? Perhaps you have a Pro or a Max.

Syncing iCloud can actually cause more issues, all explained in the thread I linked.
  • I have a macbook air, and oops I did not know that syncing could make it worse. I saw some articles saying that would fix it so thats what I tried to do. When I check my macbook information it just says Apple M2.

If your user data from the Sims 4 folder is not loading then it will not be loading the ConfigOverride folder and amended GraphicsCard.sgr file, as well as not loading saves, Mods etc. Please, read the link I gave you about iCloud, you may need to disable iCloud Drive to get your user data working again.

You can go straight to the GraphicsCards.sgr file in The Sims 4.app > Contents > Resources and edit it there but every time you repair or update the game it will replace your edited file with the default file. The link in my opening post explains this in more detail.

Ok. let's check your Sims 4 folder(s). Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and copy and paste the following command then hit Enter/Return:

    find ~ -type d -name "*The Sims 4*" 2>/dev/null

After a little while it will return the results of the search. You'll know when it's finished searching because the command prompt will reappear. Please copy and paste the results in a post here..
