"Unrecognized Video Card" MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 2019 macOS Mojave version 10.14.6. TS4 has been working since I bought the computer a month ago, but all of a sudden when I launched TS4 this evening a window popped up saying  "Unrecognized Video Card."  At first all the files except "Electronic Arts>The Sims 4" were deleted but then reappeared; however, all my downloaded CC in the Mods folder was gone. All of the games system requirements have been met, I tried to reinstall it, and I even repaired it inside Origin. I was thinking about restoring my computer to factory mode since there's not really anything on it. I honesty don't know what to do. I've been looking online but not sure what anything means. Please, help!

    Thanks 🙂 Your Intel chip isn't showing in the GraphicsCards.sgr file (Found:0) although it's showing as supported (Supported:1). Lets add it and see if that helps.

    • Right click on the game in your Applications folder and select Show Package Contents
    • Open the Contents folder then open the GraphicsCards.sgr file with TextEdit
    • Hit CMD and F to bring up the search bar in the file and type in 0x5926 then Enter/Return. It should highlight that Device ID, the full line will show
      card 0x5926 "Intel (R) HD 640" $cardLevelMedium $resolutionMedium

    • Click at the end of that line and hit Enter/Return to create a new blank line underneath it, like this:
    •
    • Copy and paste this in that empty line:
    • card 0x3ea6 "Intel (R) HD 645" $cardLevelMedium $resolutionMedium
    • Close the file then launch your game and check to see if the issue is still there. After closing your game open the Config file again and see if the value is Found:1, Supported:1

    Regarding your Mods not showing up, are your saves loading ok?

    @kaisersi

    You have to make sure the DeviceID is correct. As you can see in your info from the config file, your Device ID is 8a53 so you add 0x8a53. Change that in the line you entered and you should be good to go. Make sure you add it under the Intel section in the sgr file too.

    Great job though!

    @Bluebellflora Hello I thought I should ask here instead of opening a new thread. I just switched from a Macbook M1 Max to Macbook Pro M2 Max (16 inch, 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM) and I'm getting the "unrecognized video card" message.

    I already added my video card manually as you showed above and when doing that, the game recognizes it. But today, Origin crashed, so I did some troubleshooting (reset Origin/cleared cache manually and lastly repaired the game and also removed the Sims 4 folder from Documents (for a fresh start so to speak)) - and now when I open the game I get the same message again.

    My first question is: Do I have to reenter my graphics card data in the GraphicsCard.sgr manually after ever repair/patch/update/pack purchased etc.?

    Secondly:

    As I described above, I just switched laptops. Now I did that using Migration Assistant and all my documents, games, saves etc. have been transferred. But I didn't have to reinstall Sims 4 on my new Macbook. Could this be the reason why my graphics card is unrecognized?

    All my saves, houses etc. are fine I always keep backups anyway.

    By the way there is so much helpful stuff here on the forums and I have learned so much about how to troubleshoot myself for most issues! In this case however, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly 🙂

    Great that you've found the resources you normally need here 🙂

    When you edited the GraphicsCards.sgr file was it the one copied into the ConfigOverride folder in the Sims 4 folder or the one in the base game installation files?

    What does the Config file show under Found and Supported?

    I personally hate Migration Assistant and always set up a new Mac manually with nice new clean installs of software. Yep, it may well be that the migration didn't fully copy like for like or something got corrupted during the migration.

    @Bluebellflora Thanks for your quick response!

    I actually decided to completely reset my MacBook, I regretted using Migration Assistant. I found cache files as old as 2016 in my Library! LOL So I did that today and reinstalled The Sims. But again, as I opened the game, it says "unrecognised video card". Anyways, I'm happy to have a clean Mac and to have ruled out that possibility!

    I edited the GraphicsCards.sgr file that I found Under Applications -> The Sims 4 -> Show package contents -> Content -> Resources -> GraphicsCard.sgr

    Then I scrolled to the very end where it says:

    card 0x0000 "Apple A12Z" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1 Max" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    card 0x0000 "Apple M1 Pro" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber
    end

    And I added to the list

    card 0x0000 "Apple M2 Max" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh $cardLevelUber

    then I saved the file, closed it and restarted the game. When I then look into the Config File in my Documents The Sims 4 Folder it says Found:1 Supported:1 (so problem solved I guess).

    But whenever I repair the game it seems to reset. My Mac is also updated to the latest software.

    Did I edit the wrong file?

    If I have to edit the file every time it's no big deal honestly. I just want to know if that's normal, maybe there's going to be an update for M2 Chip in the future so it's better supported? Or maybe I did something completely wrong lol

    Thanks for your help again!

  • @puzzlezaddict  Hi there, I'm having the same issue.  Playing in Live Mode runs very slowly, though when the game is paused, it runs much smoother.  I too got the message that my video card is not supported after I upgraded my computer.  I play on a Mac.  If you don't mind taking a look, these are my graphics settings:

    === Graphics device info ===
    Number: 0
    Name (driver): Apple M2 Pro
    Name (database): [Found: 0, Supported: 1]
    Vendor: Apple
    Chipset: Vendor: 106b, Device: 0000, Board: 00000000, Chipset: 0000
    Driver: macOS Metal driver, Version: 0.0.0.0
    Driver version: 0
    Monitor: 00000600
    Texture memory: 10922MB
    Vertex program: 3.0
    Pixel program: 3.0
    Hardware TnL: 0
    Opt. features: -d24s8

    Currently I'm playing in Windowed mode, but it's moving so slow it is kind of hard to play.  Any help is much appreciated!  🙂

    @AkennArt

    Merged your post into this ongoing Mac thread. See the solution on page 1 for instructions on how to add your GPU to the GraphicsCards.sgr file. You don't have an Intel chip but the methodology is the same, use your graphics device info to enter the correct line in the file.

    There could be multiple reasons why your game is slow in live mode and this may not fix it but if the error message annoys you this will stop it.
