Work icon won't go away

This has happened to me now across multiple saves and multiple households. This is making the sims unplayable for me right now. My sims will go to their first day of work - so far I've done the Salaryperson and Politics career, and then I click "work hard" but when its time for them to come home, they physically come home but the greyed out icon for at work never goes away. 

Their inventories become inaccessible and I've tried promoting them with cheats, visiting a different lot, quitting their job and signing up for a different job but the same bug happens and they never get past their first day. 

I'm playing with minimal mods - just Mexi's BBB and an eye CC. 

I have most of the packs except Enchanted by Nature, Star Wars and a few kits. I haven't had this problem consistently before. I've had issues where this has happened once and then travelling, going to manage worlds or quitting and re-opening my game has fixed the issue. 

Please help!  This started happening about a week ago.
