Game Crashes While Building Community Spaces (Eco Lifestyle)

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:Mac
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.63.134.1220
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All packs and content installed.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Load an empty lot and change its' type to Community Space; then try to switch to the Market, Garden, or Maker Space views.
What happens when the bug occurs? Game screen flashes black and crashes to the desktop. (Sometimes the overlay appears for a few seconds before the crash; sometimes it occurs instantly.)
What do you expect to see? The "building lot" overlay should appear and the lot requirements should update.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

Since installing Eco Lifestyle, I am unable to build the new "Community Space" lots in my existing save file without the game crashing. (This is the same save that experienced the crashing bug after the 6/3 patch. After the hotfix on 6/4 the save now loads and I can go into a household, but I have been experiencing intermittent crashing while trying to build and play.)

The crashing while building Community Spaces isn't the only scenario where I've experienced sudden game crashes, but it is the most consistent one which is why I've made it the focus of the report. I've also experienced crashes while coming out of CAS after planning Sims' outfits, and while trying to save the game. At no point did I receive an in-game error message. The issue also appears to be save-specific; a new save I created did not experience this issue and I was able to create a Community Space with no problems. Right now, I'm thinking that this may be related to whatever issue caused the save to crash the game after the 6/3 patch.

Repairing the game through Origin does not resolve the issue. I've also tried earlier copies of the save file from before the recent patch and resetting my entire The Sims 4 folder, and neither worked. The problem also occurs both with and without mods and CC.

  • Do you have any lastexceptions or lastcrashes in your doc folder ? If so, could you upload them both ?

There is no "last exception" file. I've tried to attach the "last crash" file but I keep getting an error message that the file content type doesn't match its' extension. I also tried to compress it into a zip file but apparently that format is not supported. I've copied the contents under the spoiler tag as the file was not very long.

Also, I have another update. It appears this crash only happens when trying to edit community spaces outside of your active household's neighborhood. My active household are university students in Brichester's middle neighborhood (the one with the library and bar.) Previously, I had been trying to build a community space lot in Newcrest, as that is where I will be rotating to after they graduate; I hadn't planned on building one in Brichester. This morning, I decided to try turning the library into a community space and was able to flip between the different states with no crashing.

I knew that we would only be able to change the community space in our own neighborhood through gameplay, but I had been under the impression that they could all be edited from Manage Worlds. Apparently the game disagrees right now. This also doesn't explain the crashing when exiting CAS or when saving, but at least it's a start.

My sim (I only ever play one household) lives in Evergreen Harbour so I loaded up Britechester and the Mossy Lane lot, changed the lot type to Community Space and plonked down the Voting Board and it hasn't crashed. Have I not understood properly and tested wrong? I also had the crashing problem with this save until the hot fix patch fixed it.

The crashing wasn't happening when putting down the community board; it was happening when switching between the different states of the lot. I can build the generic community space with no problem, but as soon as I try to switch to the "community garden" and build that version, the game crashes.

So when you click on the Community Garden tile and it brings up the Building Lot screen for a couple of seconds that's when it crashes?

Can you move your Mods folder to the desktop, trash the localthumbcache.package file then load your game and try again?

Yes, that's the problem exactly. Removing the mods folder and trashing the cache file did not help.

So, I did a bit more experimenting with this and i have some new developments.

First, this issue is actually exclusive to Newcrest. I hopped over to Willow Creek today and I was able to switch both a Generic and an empty Residential lot to a Community Space and switch between the tabs.

Additionally, whatever is going on with Newcrest is not actually limited to the community space lots. At first, I thought the problem might have been switching from residential to Community Space (hence why I tried this in Willow Creek later), so I tried switching the lot that's been crashing to Generic first. The game crashed when I tried to go back to Manage Worlds after making the change. I then tried a different lot in Newcrest-same thing. So, even if I wanted to turn those lots into parks or restaurants right now, I couldn't. They're stuck being residential.

Later on, I want to try placing a community space lot from the gallery directly from manage worlds and switching the lot type from there. It's worth a shot.

Thanks for the feedback and more testing. Again though I managed to create and change a Community Space with no issue in Newcrest ☹️

Hopefully others will see this thread and test too, it's definitely an interesting issue.

I've moved this thread to the General Discussion and Feedback forum for now to encourage conversation and (hopefully) a bit more testing from others 🙂

Ok, so after even more testing, I've determined that the problem is actually only limited to two lots in Newcrest, not the entire world.

I only had two blank lots in Newcrest when I installed Eco Lifestyle. I had initially planned on having those two lots be the community spaces so I wouldn't have to move any families around. However, I was getting desperate last night so I hopped into build mode in the house next door, saved the lot to the library, and plopped it down on the bugged lot (which allowed me to leave it as residential.) Surprisingly, this worked fine. I then moved the family from their old lot to the new one, and after checking that I could still enter the lot and go back to manage worlds, I then went to their old lot and turned that into a community space. I was able to build all 4 lot types with no crashing.

The same can not be said, however, for my other blank lot. This was causing the same crashing issue as the first one. However, when I tried to plop down the house next door from the library, the game crashed when attempting to return to manage worlds meaning that I wasn't able to move the family. I also have no idea if any of the other lots in the world will cause the same issue if I were to try and switch them.

I've attached a screenshot of my Newcrest highlighting the lots that do not work. (The ones circled in red) and the one I was able to make work by moving a family (circled in green.)
