Judging a player

Okay so there are alot of ways to actually judge a player(‘s worth). What do you pay attention to?

at first I check which character they choose. Consensus (albeit not reliably) is pathfinder/octane/wraith are solo players/rushers/aggressive players, wattson & caustic are campers or cautious players and the rest are... a mix?

second thing I do is watch which badges they display. If I see a lvl badge, I’m already under the impression that this person either not uses that legend alot (unless I see that he has more than the 50 win badge or 50 5-kill game badge or see more than 1k kills) or that he’s not good enough to have better badges equipped because he doesn’t have them (totally prejudiced I know). If I see ‘low skill’ badges like ‘kill leader’, ‘drop 1 squad by yourself’ or one of the previous event badges I’m already thinking ‘either a player who sucks carrots or someone who just started playing again’ (especially if they have that top 5 streak badge and they’re at like 2 xD).

If I see ‘high skill badges’ but on the low count like the win badge or 5 kill badge but between 15-50 I’m like... hmmm how many kills does he have. If I see more than 800... I’m like this dude doesn’t have good track record getting kills or good win-per-kill ratio xD.

If I see good badges like 50+ wins/50+ 5 kill games and another badge, while having 800-1500 I’m already content with that player and know he can pull his own weight unless something unfortunate happens.

20 bomb/triple triple/3/4K badges mean that person is either good + lucky or a cheater and I judge by the way someone moves and how he engages in-game.

Next trackers. Trackers say alot about ppl. If he has no trackers and worthless badges it could be a very good person not wanting ppl to see the skillz beforehand but more than likely, that’s not the case.

Nowadays I hardly see ppl with the win with full team alive tracker unless they have 100+ of those. Most are just season trackers. In any given season if tracker is 50+ I consider you at least competent... this may not also be the case.

Lastly the most important gauger. In-game skillz. If I see you looting a small place like... contagion for like 5 minutes... I consider you low skilled and not aware of surroundings.

If you run up to a squad with less than desirable armor and weapons... same. Same for wanting to 3rd party while you dont seem to take in how many ppl there are (watching) and rush straight in.

If I see you shooting an AR over 100m away trying to hit a target who wasn’t even aware of you (doesnt matter if you miss or not) I dont consider you a good teammate cause you’re drawing attention. Same can be said when a teammate (usually thats me... as bloodhound or since this season Revenant) sneaks up to an enemy who hasn’t seen us and I indicate by voice or ping that I’m going somewhere to attack and I spot the enemies and you see me Rev-crouching and I’m less than 40m away and you decide to start shooting from a semi open space alerting them and making it more likely for them to spot me.. you suck and you belong on the Teletubbies show just like that cool vacuum. Same can be said if you run straight pass me, alerting them someone is there and start shooting at the first person you see.

I can go on but these are one of the main points...

so how bout you? Do you (dis)agree? Do you have some additions? Place them below

@Cro_Pittt Remember, books have fancy covers made for judging that book by it XD. But you cant judge anything by stats or even one match. What you do in one match is like a snapshot. Maybe that person is actually quite good but now just doesn’t feel like it or is occupied or under the influence of something. But that snapshot is all you have to judge that pic by so it better be a good one.

It’s all the willingness to learn. I display prominent badges & markers to assert dominance. Most times ppl follow me and I dont steer them wrong. It’s when they stop doing what I ping or follow ‘too closely’ (by which I mean I’m flanking as Revenant and they just walk or run next to me) is when things go sour...

But to give credit, most humans (as studies have shown) are very narrow minded so if they engage in battle, all focus is on battle and not on ‘hey that guy’s pinging away from battle’ or before battle ‘that guy’s pinging enemy somewhere else than where I’m looking’ to actually center their attention towards that point...
  • the most i hate is teammates who want rush alone with wraith, pathfinder or octane but ended knocked while im still behind even i still deciding is that rush ping worth it

second is dumb rusher want sandwich someone without thinking they are STILL 6 people and still strong, ended being the one who got sandwiched

  • @Koochi-Q Season 0- to about mid season 3 I checked stats badges etc. Honestly they don't really tell you anything. All of my legends have been stripped of all of the badges and trackers of any merit. I use the baller badge on every one and that is it.

First thing I look at is in game drop. Do you pick a spot, do you have the ability to loot and fight where you drop? Find out quick enough. In ranked almost every game is drop cage/skull town or pit. Most of those games I wind up solo or back at the lobby. Occasionally I get squad mates who can handle those situations and drops. No shield a p2020 and lets fight it out mentality only goes so far ya know.

Most of my opinions come from their decisions about moving and rotating circles. If they decide to go to the middle of every circle I start giving them a wide berth and edge rotating solo. Especially on KC, who the hell wants to be right in the middle where you are getting blasted from every direction? Another thing I watch is their ammo types. If I have a teammate with shotgun and light/ heavy ammo and I keep hearing a charge from them for their peacekeeper, and then subsequently followed up by a long range sniper shoddy shot, I am giving them a wide berth. I have had plenty of teammates this season die to charge havoc shots, I mean seriously sat there for 3 to the face before thinking maybe I should move.

Anyhoot I give almost no merit to the badges on face value. 4k 20 bomb, maybe they can handle themselves, maybe not. My experience has been most of them I have played with think they are invincible and use poor rotation and just jump into multi-squad fights without looking at the 3 squads outlying watching to see when they can come in and mop up.

No matter the badge or skill level i think landing skull town or on WE frag is a crap shoot. You are probably going to be fighting pre-mades that are talking to each other and can fight as a squad and in early game it is hard to get a sense of your random teammates anyways. Just my opinion, but it has also been my experience.

@mastiffslinger So basically my way of thinking, except less emphasis on the badges.

Spoken like a true master (this is not sarcastic :P). I have to have something to either hype me up about someone or pull me down. I cant be neutral... hate that :P
  • Than you're in select character screen and player already writes "hi". It's nice and I really appreciate that but 99% of time that means hes gonna die in first 10 seconds of landing xD

  • @Koochi-Q Most important is Level IMO. I just played a match and had a wraith(110 LVL) with a 2k badge. I thought he is ok. Heck, I even tried giving him my Gold body shield. Pushed a squad, downed 2 of them and then I got downed and my teammate octane was downed from before(went to help him). My wraith is standing 100 m away on a cliff and trying to snipe him and pushes after he rezed one of his mates. Never trust a player <150.
  • A little about myself for reference. I think I'm a bad player; skill wise I'm probably at the skill level of an average lvl 180 (current lvl is like 240; doesn't tell you much but you can guess how much I've played). I think my K/D ratio for this season is 0.76, where on a decent team my damage would average about 380 and 1 or 2 kills, and my matches are normally 5th or 3rd place.

Now, with this in mind, I'd say to be a good player, you need to at least be able to do what I do:

    • Clear a place quickly and cleanly; if you've beaten everyone at mirage voyage, don't just immediately run because the first ring rang, pick up the spoils within 30 seconds or less and then run, unless you think you've been fighting there for too long and you think you'll be third partied. Also pick up things as you run (I usually never stop to pick something up unless I keep missing it, I'm constantly running and picking up)
    • Don't just leave your teammates behind; ping where you are going and if you notice a straggler ping a couple of times because they might not even notice that the team has moved on
    • Ping all attachments (including white), strong weapons, gear, consumables at early phase, then only blue and above during mid phase of the game
    • Ping what gear you need
    • Ping if you see an enemy, don't just shoot at them because your teammates might not know what/where you are shooting at
    • Ping where you are landing
    • Don't just leave because you were downed first, if your team is competent enough, they can pick you up. Usually a bad team is wiped out within the first 10 seconds upon first downed ally. (Can't tell you how annoyed I am by how many times I've picked up a banner after eliminating a squad and the person just quits. Then we get second place at the end and an extra teammate would've helped).
    • Don't get angry cause you die first by charging in and blaming your teammates; if your team is sniping the enemies at a good vantage point, provide covering fire, it might not hit anything, but it'll prevent people from charging at your team when they need to heal or reload. Or just watch the periphery or sides so your team doesn't get third partied.
    • If you want your entire team to charge in, ping it or say move in; don't complain after the fact because it'll be too late by then (never understood this behavior). There's pings for attacking a location, and a literal mic to give directions, use it....seriously
    • Don't heal at the same time as your teammates if you are under attack. Alternate between shooting and aiming, provide covering fire for your healing teammates and then move in for the kill if necessary.
    • Use the survey beacon, it's like 3/4 of pathfinders don't remember that they have this ability.
    • if you lose, don't make a big deal about it by being toxic, just move on to the next game; it's teaching bad behavior and ruins the community. You can just as easily vent by muting your mic or screaming like a lunatic in your own house at 6 in the morning.

Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.
