Re: Mac EA app - "The app crashed unexpectedly" or "Background Services Crashed"

INFO - Post Marked as Solution for Visibility

Hello everyone,

Thank you for continuing to report the "The app crashed unexpectedly" and "Background Services Crashed" errors on the EA app for Mac.

We've heard from some players that updating your Mac to the latest macOS version, including incremental updates, can resolve the issue. Additionally, some users have found that a simple restart of their machine helps.

Updating the client

For those still experiencing the problem after trying these solutions, we've released a new version of the EA app for Mac (13.206) that will hopefully address the issue. The EA app periodically automatically checks for updates and will install this version when you next launch the client. However, if the EA app won't boot, you can download the latest version directly from https://www.ea.com/ea-app.

We will also be releasing additional fixes in the coming weeks.

Still experiencing the issue?

Please let us know how things go after trying these steps. If the issue persists, check the first post on page 1 of this thread and continue to provide the requested data.

Thank you.

  • y'all I cannot believe I'm saying this but I found the dumbest "workaround" to get the game to lauch... I double clicked the freaking sims 4 app in applications...

the EA app did activate at this point which made me worried, and it took a minute or two, but the second that beautiful lil green plumbob swooped around on my screen I nearly cried with relief. pls don't judge me, sims is like the only enjoyable thing in this world right now lol (thanks to incredible MODDERS, NOT EA). looks like they put out a new ea app version, so try that first, but if that still doesn't work, try and just double click Sims 4 in your applications folder.

  • @EA_Leeuw Is the new EA App designed for Intel chip ?

My Mac doesn't have M1 or M2 chip, it's not formatted for Apple Silicon as it's MacBook Air from 2015. (Apple has released new chipset in 2020, called M1 and M2, designed for Apple products only ; before that, Mac used Intel chipset like a lot of computer brand).

All exec files from EA App can't launch because of "format error". For some of us, the MacOS update is not working (myself included) ; maybe it's all about the format design ? Maybe EA App update didn't take into account the Mac's variety of chips ?

Can all the users relate (or not) ? What kind of chips do you all have ?

@EA_Leeuw It's becoming really annoying. It's been four days, how can you not have fixed this issue ?

I can't count the amount of bugs inside the Sims 4 game itself. All of us has PAID A LOT OF MONEY for all the packs and stuff and we're not able to just play the game. EA knows what players are thinking about the game : it's bugs and bugs, over and again. Yes, new expansion pack ! Oh no, hundred of bugs. Yes, a new app ! Oh, no, can't launch it, what a pity.

You're going to get some concurrency with Inzoi, Paralives and other life simulation games. You must work harder on what people is reporting to you. Even Sims content creators are upset. EA should be ashamed of all this crap.

Fixing the app should be a PRIORITY. I've been playing the Sims since 20 f*cking years, bought a lot of packs, I'm so pissed of not be able to play whenever I want to !

At least, be a good customer service and answer us EVERYDAY, to update us. Even for just telling us "we're working hard on this, don't worry" etc. We just feel like you don't give a f*cking sh*t, you leave us (your clients for god sake!) all alone.

I have an intel chip too and mine continues to crash every time I try to redownload or open the ea app. MacBook pro 2017. updated to ventura 13.6.7

  • Even with this new download the same initial crash pop-up occurs and I am completely unable to open the app. The second crash message was slightly different and said "The EA app encountered an unknown error. Try again later" and gave error code EC:106

I'm going to put in a plug again to PLEASE just re-open origin for those of us that are completely unable to play any games while EA is taking all this time to figure out what the problem is.

  • @EA_리우 I can't speak English, so I use a translator.
How long do I have to wait? I can't play games? There's no feedback. What are you doing? Are you causing this inconvenience to consumers? If it takes time, let me play in Origin. Why did you stop Origin? I've tried all the solutions that people have written here. But it can't be solved!!!!!!!!I want to play Sims this weekend. So please solve it quickly!!!!

@Lilpinkypumkin I understand you do much I have this problem since 1 month and no answer or solution of their « customer service » !! And the thing that pissed me off is that I bought 3 new packs of sims 4 one day before the migration 😭

  • Posting an update as I was one of the original reporters of this issue for Mac: The EA app now works for me and I'm finally able to play Sims4 again!

    Here's what I did:

    1) Deleted the EA app from my applications and emptied the trash

    2) Restarted my computer (idk if this was necessary but can't hurt)

    3) Downloaded the latest EA app release for Mac (13.206) from the link posted by the community manager a few days ago: https://www.ea.com/ea-app

    4) Opened the installer and dragged the EA app into applications when it instructed me to do so

    5) EA app successfully opened for the first time without crashing – hallelujah! All of my game progress was still in tact.

Thank you for posting this solution as it did work for me. Hoping it works for others too, though it sounds like people are still encountering issues with this new release.

  • @EA_Leeuw Is there still no solution to this problem? I don't know about everyone else but I'm checking here daily for updates and there's been nothing for weeks.

  • @EA_Leeuw ""We've heard from some players that updating your Mac to the latest macOS version, including incremental updates, can resolve the issue.""

REALLY?!?! I don't know if you're aware but SOME OF US CANNOT AFFORD THE LATEST VERSION OF EVERYTHING (or even afford to upgrade to a machine that supports Mac OS big sur!!) some of us PEASANTS are stuck with Catalina or older and need a solution for that - can't upgrade to the latest BUT just new enough that Origin is no good 🤯🆘

    Hi @Bullworth_Queen,

As mentioned in [ANNOUNCEMENT] The EA app for Mac has arrived!

*The EA app for Mac is available for Macs running macOS Catalina or newer.

*Origin for Mac is still available to download for Macs running macOS Mojave or older.

What we mean by "We've heard from some players that updating your Mac to the latest macOS version, including incremental updates, can resolve the issue" is simply that updating your Mac to the most recent version of macOS that your device supports may fix the problem. We're not suggesting that you need to buy a new Mac or make any other major purchases.
