Players don't move/locked

I head the ball to my teammate. The game automatically switches me to the pass receiver. I'm pointing the left stick in the direction of the ball but my player won't move. He's waiting for the ball to arrive. Then my opponent swoops in and intercepts the pass. Why does this happen?

I'd also like to mention that the gameplay got much worse after my opponent paused (input delay, sluggish play, the usual issues).
