value of critical avoidance

hi all
i am trying to evaluate how effective critical avoidance is?
by rearranging mods on my shoretrooper, hp+prot/(1-armor) value may go up by like %5. But i have to give up %21 critical avoidance.
fighting wiggs and droids mostly, which tend to crit a lot..
so how does critical avoidance work, is it like when it procs it saves all damage or like it only saves the critical part and the basic damage still applies?
thx in advance for any advice

It reduces the chance of a crit hit.
    Her is my understanding
if you have 24% crit avoidance and the attacker has 74% crit chance the change of crit hit is 50%.

Works great in p3 of tank raid on your tanks.

IMO in arena doesn't help that much vs droids or anyone with crit chance at 75% or above.
  • Bad vs Wiggs, great for every other team.

The Wiggs assist is +75% crit. Most well modded toons are 50% base. 125% -24% is still a guaranteed crit.
  • I'm curious too... I had Critical Avoidance on my ShoreTrooper, and I think it saved a few crits from Rex or Wedge's AoE, but not the one that really mattered: The big assist.
For some reason I wanted him to not lose all protection too fast (i.e. not on the first hit), so I went back to +23.5% Protection.

I'm still unsure if it works as described above (actual chance of cirt = Attacker's crit chance - 24%, meaning it's useless when the attacker's crit chance goes to 124% or more), or in a much more favourable manner of (First determine if there's a crit based on Attacker's crit chance, then revert the crit with 24% probability). I suspect the first one, which makes it effective against enemies that have low crit chance and high crit damage.

All in all, I think 24% is just not enough to make a difference worth of a mod slot that could give +30 speed or +23.5% Protection.
  • If you like using Ahsoka the crit avoidance value is pretty handy. Her abilities hinge around giving / recieving crit hits so i've found that to be pretty handy for her.

Agree. Giving up 30 speed is tough.
I will say I had some on my leaderboard using them and my alaya at 74% crit chance was missing a lot of stun chances and of course when she did crit damn thing would get resisted.

It does work really well in p3 of tank raid. Since using them on rg and sunfac received 0 crits from rocket man.
  • Critical avoidance on tanks Is a no brainer (outside maybe GK). You can see it like this you diminish by 24% crit chance. On many toons that is almost 50% less crit. Hence almost 1/3 less damage in expectation.
  • So... when it works, is it basically just reducing crit rates? Is it mitigating crit damage like a soft soak? Or does it actually completely dodge a critical hit?

It simply turns the critical hit into a non-critical hit. So if your enemy has 20% crit chance, and you have 24% critical avoidance, they have a -4% crit chance and every attack they do on you is guaranteed to be a non-crit. Dodge/Deflection is another entity entirely. It only mitigates crit damage in the sense that you don't take the critical hit so it will be less damage overall, it doesn't actually directly reduce the damage their crits do.
  • It's meh, speed and speed are more important. Just farm speed and put potency on EP health for most others. Speed plus Dooku = ridiculous.
