The thing is that even if EA doesn't care, that still does not explain the decisions they took with the sims4, and I think that's what is starting to make people angry. People have asked for certain things for 6 years, hoping that EA and Maxis will listen, and instead we have gotten things that have not been highly requested and people are getting fed up with it.
It's not about the money that went to make Star Wars: Journey to Batuu, it's that money did not go to anything else. I heard the same argument about Spark'd. "Lol, that is a completly different budget" ok? but what did the other budget go to? oh right. Star Wars. "Lol, that is also a different budget" oh ok again, what else did you make? Eco Lifestyle. But that EP is full of bugs! "Oh, that's not our fault."
ok, great, I guess I won't buy anything else then.
The point of the video isn’t just about SW JTB, it’s about how decisions about the game, and it’s marketing are made overall. Spark’d was another attempt to bring new players into the community because EA doesn’t think of The Sims Community in the warm cozy way the name would suggest when they hear “Sims Community” they think pool of buyers. Their only mission is to appeal to the largest pool of buyers possible to recoup the highest possible profits for their shareholders.
As Claire said the Gurus and devs do care what we want, they do try to go to bat for us, but if what they produce isn’t hitting high profit margins if new people are coming in to play the games then they are not going to get money allocated to do the things we’re asking them for, period.
It doesn't feel like that money is going into improving the game though, sadly. Just more, and more shallow packs. Well hopefully this pack will please their shareholders and draw in new players... I wonder how well it will be received by new players though, I suspect they will be able to play through the story in this pack in one or two hours.
Not that EA cares though, they got their money.
I think it’s safe to day that considering we are told “This is too expensive!” And animations and hair styles and swatches are re used all the freaking time, that the profit that the sims is making is not going back into The Sims. Perhaps it’s going into Fifa or Madden but it sure ain’t the Sims 4.
Why would Star Wars fans pay say £70 for a base game and game pack when they can buy a full fledged Star Wars game cheaper? Star Wars fans want to play Star Wars not dress up Star Wars.
EA want to make money off Star Wars, that’s fine but they know people are still salty over their last Star Wars games with loot boxes so rather than make a decent game without loot boxes, they are throwing it to a community who will buy it even if they don’t like it.
Hmm... because there are not that many Star Wars games out there that are not into shooting-all-the-things. I played KOTOR a bit and SWTOR. But I have books and stuff for Star Wars. See every movie multiple times in the theater.
My husband told me about another Star Wars game that was coming out, perhaps I would like to play it? I asked if I could play a female character and the answer was no. Then it was not for me.
The Star Wars fandom is large and different players have different “needs” before getting a new game. One of mine is being able to play a female character and if it is a rpg I really like being able to form friendships or romances. Star Wars is a space opera and a love story. I like having some form of relationships in my game. Other Star Wars fans are more into the war-bit.
So in the end, I did not buy that other Star Wars game. But I checked it out and considered it. We are not a homogenous group :)

EA has made miscalculations about its games before (Simcity was a disaster)...

SimCity (before EA got it's "cut corners" grubby little fingers on it) used to be a fantastic game when Maxis was still independent.
I agree with the money issue too...why pay $80 for what is most likely a liberal 3-20hr worth of Star Wars game play. I predict that once a new player gets through the Star Wars story progression, they will get frustrated that "there is nothing now to do". And because EA never fleshed out the background stories/relationships/scenarios like in Sims 2 and 3, there isn't even an open-ended story to begin playing in the middle of, not to mention a lack of meaningful whims or fears to guide a player when they are not sure where their story could go next.
(Note: bienchens mod "whims overhaul" saved me...now my sims have whim desires worth doing, which helps greatly in my storytelling)

I played Star Wars for YEARS before I even downloaded Sims 4 on a whim. So I’m just one woman who went from Star Wars to Sims 4, there could be more interested in trying it out. It took some time getting out of the rpg- and MMO-thing into a more sandbox game but I’m really liking it here.

These forums, and Twitter combined are but a speck of the current audience and don’t make a drop in the ocean for potential new players.
This is exactly my argument.
Attracting new players = good
..at the expense of losing high longterm buyers = bad
Potential new players only expand profits for the company if it keeps its current buyers as well.
Attracting 2 one time buyers who dish out $80 each while losing a long-term customer who has put $100s-$1000s loyally into your company for years mathematically does not make sense to me.
I love how people assume that companies are responsible, do research, and run data as if there is some kind of protocol. Study history, and you'll find out that many companies literally just wing it. Responsibility of research cuts into profits, so it just depends how greedy a company is to determine whether or not they care about their homework of potential losses.
If the highest donor, or even less than a dozen people who are at the top, think it's a great idea, it will be implemented no matter what. EA is too big to fail right now and can do whatever it wants. Yay for getting rid of all those monopoly laws in the 2000s!
Good thing EA still gets some things right when Maxis actually gets its way, or else I would have left the franchise a long time ago. I just miss the days when I bought every pack on day 1 release and was never disappointed with its content and quality, even if there was a temporary glitch here and there. I would love those days back."SilentKitty;c-17636192" wrote:

Sounds like me! I played all the previous Sims games, but was slow getting into Sims 4 because I was playing SWTOR at the time, and then I got the Sims 4, and eventually, it took over as my go-to game (having issues logging into SWTOR kinda had something to do with that :D) So pretty much looking forward to this pack.- Karamazov123Seasoned Adventurer

Thank goodness they put the "safe stuff" because that was the only reason I bought it. The military career, a new world, decent amount of CAS/Build additions, and a new "negative" trait, paranoid, was worth $10 in my eyes, so I waited for Strangerville to go 50% off before buying.
The story was a cute gimmick, but I love the neighborhood of Strangerville more as it strongly reminds me of Strangetown in Sims 2 so much that I keep my aliens, mad scientists, and aloof rich politicians in Strangerville like I used to in Strangetown.
I thought at the time it was cute they gave us a tiny bit of something different all while still giving us many of traditional long-term features. Little did I know that they were going to take "guided gameplay" to the next level.
I think there are 3 stories to play out in JTB, which is waaaaaaay better than coming up with hundreds of stories where you decide what happens like Sims games of past...and even better?! Added Bonus! You can also visit Batuu any time after the story is over where there is little to do and even watch your neighbors in other worlds light-saber battle in the streets!- ck213Seasoned Scout

I am a little concerned for JTB's stories.
It seems like it's going to be structured like Strangerville. I was a bit excited about Strangerville because I was going all out for a setup to play this pack. I added Mulder and Scully and aliens in disguise who may have had something to do with what was going on in Strangerville.

I built a government lot to house my agents and the aliens that were taken into custody.

I also had two side characters that were in the Military and Science careers.

And I was enjoying it initially, but I became bored with the laundry list of tasks:
Talk to this person, get this key-card, get this suit, get this filter...

I think was getting more enjoyment out of making my sims and building my lot than I was the game play.
Also just playing the careers and having standard play with my sims.
I never finished Strangerville. I could tell where the story was going and I was feeling that when I finished, it probably be a long time before I played it out again, if ever. I do agree that I can use the town as a TS4 version of Strangetown.
Perhaps my problem was I was also using it to post a story and it was slowing my pace down.
I will try again someday, but I probably won't play my agents. I will use them as NPCs in Strangerville to add a little richness to what is already there. I hope The Journey To Batuu will have more fun game play, The Star Wars theme should help a lot because I am way more interested in it than Strangerville. Just looking at the game trailer, it seems tighter and more controlled. I don't think I will be building and adding characters to it. It will be interesting to find out how it plays. - CAPTAIN_NXR7Seasoned Hotshot

Yes I was fully on board, but I changed my mind..I watched videos from some of my other fav. youtubers and realized what they were saying that this was just to make a quick buck and an advertisement for the park, when the last thing we need is Star Wars.
Y'all acting like I can't change my mind?! Excuse me, why are you having a problem if I went from wanting it to not wanting it???
I can change my mind.
Of course one can change their mind. That’s no problem at all.
What surprises me is that you went from one extreme to the other extreme.
First you were telling everybody to back off and let others enjoy their enthusiasm for a Star Wars pack, now you’re practically leading the dislikes group on this forum. Because of a couple of you tubers?
From the moment the trailer came out we knew that this pack is an advertisement for the park. I mean it’s based on Galaxy’s Edge of all things.
Of course EA is planning to make big bucks out of this. I mean, it’s EA of all things.
But it’s also a Star Wars GP that many could actually enjoy because they have an interest for Star Wars inspired gameplay.
Look, don’t get me wrong. I’m in no way saying that changing your mind is bad. I’m just surprised that you did a complete 180, because it has always been obvious why this pack exists. Even when it was only speculations. No YouTubers needed.
Are you sure you don’t want Star Wars in your game? ;) *Does Jedi Force Handwave*
