NEW download of Origin, SIMS 4 and Legacy - nothing works on Mac

I've tried to look at some threads on here but can't quite find the solution I'm after.

Ive never downloaded Origin or the SIMS or any game before - so I downloaded Origin onto the Mac today.  Then bought The SIMS 4.  Tried to play it and it came up with an error code saying Download Legacy edition.  I did that.

Legacy edition doesn't show up in My Library but when looking at the SIMS 4 game, if I scroll down to additions I can buy, Legacy is at the bottom telling me I've bought it and the Play button is there.  I click on play and I still get the same error code saying that I need to download Legacy??

I'm confused.  Even though I've only just downloaded everything for the 1st time today I have updated both games and repaired them (having read various threads) - still the same message.

I've tried Right Clicking on the game, and going to Advanced Game options but I only get Game Language - with the only option being English US, and in the Command Line - it's blank.

It's taken all day to download Origin, The SIMS 4, Legacy Edition and then repair games (which seems like it's just an option to download again - it takes just as long).

These are the details of my MAC:

OS X El Capitan

iMac 21.5inch, mid 2011

2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

4GB 1333 MHz DDR3

AMD Radeon HD 6750Mb 521MB

(Whatever all that means - I am not very techy)

Can anyone help with what to do?

  • This is the actual message it shows when I try to play SIMS Legacy:

    Unable to start:

Unable to start due to missing game data. Please download The Sims 4 Legacy Edition from Origin.

  • @Tildaaaa1 Similar problem here. It will be helpful when there's a problem on starting the game on origin and tells me report of what went wrong. But, in my case, every time I try playing, it keeps crashing with no report. Only, leaving the last crash.file. Repairing doesn't work, and only it keeps restarting my Legacy edition to be downloaded back to square one. I think the main issue isn't in my Mac laptop, (but Origin). Weirdly enough, I can't even login specifically in EA TheSims4 gallery website when I am clearly logged in to my account.

You haven't bought the Legacy Edition, the Legacy Edition is required for non-Metal supported Macs, which yours is (thanks for the specs. very helpful).

When you click on the game in your Origin games library, select the Extra Content tab and scroll down to the bottom where Legacy is, what option does it give you in the orange button? Is that where it says Play?

Do you have a Sims 4 Legacy Edition folder in Documents > Electronic Arts?

Yes that's where it says play.  In the extra content - Legacy Edition it says play.  That took about 2 hours to download so I've definitely downloaded it and it is definitely showing that I have it.  I sat and watched it download the Legacy Edition for quite some time.  If I haven't downloaded it - what did I do??

  • I wonder why the Sims 4 isn’t in the EA file - that’s showing up in my Applications folder. Is this part of the problem - that they seem to have downloaded and saved in different places?  And the Sims Legacy Edition just looks like a saved folder whilst the Sims 4 Game looks like an actual application - does that mean anything?

    Im so confused.

Your Sims 4 Legacy Edition folder is the equivalent of the Sims 4 folder for Metal supported Macs and is where your saves etc. are.

Is the Sims 4 folder in your Applications folder actually named The Sims 4 Packs? This is where your packs are now installed to and should not be confused with the Sims 4 folder explained above.

Please try the super repair here, let me know how you get on - https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612394#M815
