Sims 4 on SSD / Mods problem

Hi everyone!

Due to running low on disk space I decided to take the plunge and install Sims 4 for Mac on an external SSD (Samsung T5).

I wanted to have ALL the game files on the SSD, not just the games itself, so I created a new user on my Mac, to be used specifically for Sims 4, and set it up so that this user has the SSD as the default storage/home directory. As far as I understood, this is the only way to allow ALL game data to be stored externally.

The problem I have now, is the game refuses to run with any mods. It runs perfectly fine 'vanilla', but as soon as I load any mod in, it throws the "Cannot start because game data is missing or damaged"-error.

I tried running the game on my other user (the admin user) and it worked loading it up with the test mod I was using (game itself is installed on the SSD but placing the mod in the automatically created EA folder) but as soon as went on to the other user and put the mod in the Mods folder on the SSD, it refuses to start again.

Any ideas why this is happening/not working?

Extra info:

Computer is up to date

Game is fully patched

Admin user: iCloud Drive > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods

Sims user: Samsung T5 > Sims folder > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods

(Note: The folder called "Sims folder" on the T5 was created to remember this is where I wanted the game to go)

The Sims 4 folder has to be stored locally on the machine, not on the external. Do you also have the game installed in the 'Sims folder'?

No, the game is installed on the SSD (set this up through Origin) but a different folder to the "Sims folder".

That's annoying as I read somewhere the whole game could be installed on the SSD with folders and everything as long as the "main storage" as I described above was set to the SSD itself. Hm ☹️

Not that I know of but if you have a link to where you read it I'd be interested to see how they did it 🙂
  • Hi, I just saw this looking for an answer to a similar issue and I found that when I installed the sims 4 and transferred it to my ssd it kept the folder for the sims 4 saved on my laptop and I copied all of my mod files into the Mods folder saved on my laptop and they've now appeared in the load-up so I'm assuming that's worked fine. I know I'm quite late to this message but hope it helps all the same 🙂
