INFO – Pinned For Visibility (link to post)
Hi everyone -- thanks for laying out the details clearly. Let’s separate what’s happening here, because there are two different root causes being mixed together.
1) Windows 7 / Unsupported OS
If you're on Windows 7 (or older), the EA app is no longer supported and will not install. That includes errors like INST-3-1920 during the final stage of setup. This isn’t a temporary bug and isn’t something that can be worked around with reinstall attempts, Safe Mode, or clean Windows resets.
The EA app requires Windows 10 or 11 (as mentioned on https://www.ea.com/ea-app). If the OS doesn’t meet minimum requirements, the background service required for installation won’t properly register or start.
I understand the frustration, especially regarding access to previously purchased titles. However, once platform requirements change, the client must meet current security and infrastructure standards.
2) INST-3-1920 on Windows 10/11
For users on Windows 10/11, this specific error is typically tied to the EABackgroundService failing to start or register correctly.
Please check the following:
- Confirm the service exists
- Press Win + R
- Type services.msc
- Look for EABackgroundService
- If present → Set Startup Type to Automatic
- Start the service manually
- Retry installation
If the service is missing entirely, that usually indicates the installer failed to register it due to permission or system conflicts.
- Clean boot test
Third-party security tools and system-level utilities can silently block service creation.
- Perform a clean boot (disable non-Microsoft services temporarily)
- Reboot
- Run the installer as Administrator
Re-enable services after testing.
- Blank installer window
If the installer window appears blank, that’s typically:
- Corrupted web components
- TLS/SSL configuration issues
- Network-level filtering (corporate DNS, Pi-hole, firewall appliances)
Make sure:
- Windows is fully updated
- No network filtering is blocking EA domains
- Date/time on the system is correct
Regarding Steam launches
Even if you purchased through Steam, some EA titles that require the EA app will still authenticate through it. Steam does not replace the EA client for those specific titles.
Important reality check
If you're on Windows 7 and choosing not to upgrade, there is currently no supported way to run the EA app. That’s not a troubleshooting gap -- it’s a platform requirement.
If you're on Windows 10/11 and still hitting this error after checking the service, please confirm:
- Your exact Windows version (Settings → About)
- Whether EABackgroundService appears in services.msc
- Whether the installer window is blank or fully visible
We’ll narrow it down from there.
