An Optional Subscription Model for The Sims 4

I have an idea that I believe could benefit both players and EA while helping The Sims remain competitive in the growing life simulation market.

What if The Sims 4 offered an optional monthly subscription that granted access to all DLC while still allowing players to purchase and permanently own packs individually?

This would not replace ownership. Players who buy packs would continue to own them forever. The subscription would simply be another way to access content.

Benefits for Players

- New players would not be overwhelmed by the cost of years of DLC.

- Players could experience the full game immediately.

- Console players and players who switch platforms would have a more affordable option.

- Players could try content before deciding which packs they want to permanently own.

- Families with multiple players could access content more easily.

Benefits for EA

- Consistent recurring revenue.

- Increased player retention.

- More players entering the Sims ecosystem.

- Higher engagement across all content.

- An opportunity to bring back former players who feel priced out of the current DLC model.

Many players see the total cost of expansions, game packs, stuff packs, and kits and decide not to spend anything at all. A subscription would convert many of those players into paying customers.

Competition Is Growing

For many years, The Sims had little direct competition. Today, life simulation games such as Paralives and inZOI are entering the market and attracting attention from players who may have previously only considered The Sims.

The Sims still has a major advantage: years of content, established communities, deep gameplay systems, and a franchise that millions of players already love.

However, accessibility and pricing matter. A subscription model would lower the barrier to entry and make it easier for players to choose The Sims over competing life simulation games.

Ownership Still Matters

Players who have purchased packs over the years should continue to receive the benefits of ownership. They paid for permanent access and should keep that advantage.

Subscribers would simply be renting access. Over time, many subscribers may choose to purchase their favorite packs outright, creating additional revenue opportunities for EA while giving players flexibility.

Why I Would Subscribe

I love The Sims and would subscribe immediately. I believe many players who currently spend nothing because the entry cost feels too high would do the same.

An optional subscription would not replace ownership—it would expand access, increase player retention, and help The Sims remain the leading life simulation franchise for years to come.

What do other Simmers think?

  • I would not support this type of model. All it encourages is for people to no longer own the games they paid for. I do not have paid subscriptions of any kind due to it encouraging businesses to control what people may have access to.

  • As a simmer who has brought most the content on PlayStation AND Mac (aka 2 copies of each EP, kit, stuff pack, game pack) if they did this they should offer a refund cause otherwise it’s like being punished for being a loyal simmer.
…. but if they do offer a full refund then yeah love the idea
