Cross-Platform DLC Transfers for The Sims 4

Dear Reader,

As a dedicated Sim player for over 18 years, I genuinely love and enjoy the game. While I've occasionally been frustrated by some updates (or the lack thereof), nothing has been more disheartening than the inability to transfer purchased packs across platforms.

I currently play on PlayStation but have been considering switching to PC/Mac for greater convenience, especially when traveling. However, I was shocked to discover that the significant investment I've made in The Sims 4 content—over $1,400 across expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs, and kits—would not carry over to a new platform.

This limitation is both frustrating and discouraging for loyal players like myself. What is the point of having an EA account if it doesn't provide the flexibility to access purchased content across platforms? The idea of repurchasing the same DLC content for another $1,400 is unreasonable and alienating to devoted fans.

Allowing cross-platform pack transfers would offer more advantages than drawbacks:

  1. Player Loyalty and Customer Appreciation:
The Sims franchise thrives on its passionate and loyal player base. Allowing cross-platform pack transfers would show that EA values and appreciates its most dedicated players.
  2. Increasing Player Engagement:
Players are more likely to engage with the game on multiple platforms when their content carries over. This flexibility enhances the player experience, encouraging greater long-term involvement in the game.
  3. Consistency with Industry Trends:
Cross-platform play and transferable purchases are becoming industry standards. Major gaming companies such as Epic Games, Microsoft, and Ubisoft have embraced this model, making it easier for players to access their content across different devices. EA should follow suit to remain competitive and player-focused.
  4. Convenience for Players on the Go:
Gaming isn't confined to a single device anymore. Many players, myself included, would love to play The Sims 4 while traveling or on road trips by simply hotspotting a laptop to a phone. Without cross-platform content, this becomes nearly impossible for console players.
  5. Protection Against Piracy:
The current system inadvertently encourages players to seek unauthorized ways to access their paid content on other platforms. Offering a legitimate solution for transferring packs would reduce the incentive for piracy.
  6. Increased DLC Sales:
Players who have the flexibility to use their packs across platforms are more likely to continue purchasing new content rather than feeling alienated by platform restrictions.
  7. Improved Customer Satisfaction:
Happy customers are more likely to recommend the game and remain loyal to the franchise. Allowing pack transfers would address a significant pain point for many players, fostering a more positive relationship with the EA brand.

I understand that some might argue I should simply remain on PlayStation, but it's not always practical. Being able to hotspot my laptop during travel and play like so many other players would be a game-changer for me.

I appreciate the hard work the team puts into developing new content, and I'm more than willing to continue supporting The Sims series financially. However, I cannot justify paying twice for the same content. Loyal fans deserve a better solution. I sincerely hope EA will consider addressing this issue and providing a solution that benefits the entire player base.

Thank you for your time and for listening to this long-time player's concerns.

  • KLB331 we see this comment a lot but it's actually not in the control of EA. The platforms themselves are all competitors in a highly competitive market, so there's that. But mainly it's the fact that content including add-ons are designed, formatted and manufactured for that specific platform and are simply not compatible with other platforms. Even console content doesn't transfer so Xbox doesn't transfer to PlayStation and vice versa.

  • Can everyone please let Sims packs purchased on one platform be transferred to another? Why do I have to buy the same packs I already own on Xbox? It’s greedy and unnecessary, not to mention how much I already have to spend on packs. Just to have a new world and some features that I already have, I now have to buy them again just to have the same gameplay. The reason many people, including myself, stopped playing the game is simply because it’s not customer friendly. It’s extremely disappointing that this game now feels like one big cash grab..

  • I have an ea account, bought a bunch of packs on my PC but how come we can't use this on console? I paid a whole bunch of money for all those packs and I have to repurchase everything on console when I already have an account with everything on it? Everything full price is touching like 600+ bucks. That's crazy.

ariib3000 it's because it's a totally different product. It's manufactured by and purchased from another company and formatted, designed and licensed for a different platform. The console version isn't compatible with a PC or laptop. The Xbox version wouldn't work on a PlayStation.

Different platform equals not compatible. While I sympathize, it is reality. The formatting is just different and that also explains why there are times consoles don't always get the patches at the same time as PC.  The release date on PC was in 2014 and the release date on consoles was in 2017. I believe they had to create a seperate team orginally to convert the PC game to console format. I understand not having all the packs you purchased. I now have 2 EA accounts because the EA app doesn't allow 2 computer to play the game at the same time. Origin used to allow that, but the EA app kicks you out or the game if another computer tries to open it. My kids and I like to play at the same time. One account on has base game while the other has everything I bought. My kids are thinking they might buy a couple of packs with sales after Christmas and that means we bought some packs twice.

Basically, the only reason we can’t transfer Sims packs between devices is because Sony and Microsoft want their 30% cut every single time you buy something, and EA is greedy enough to go along with it. There’s nothing “technical” stopping them. The systems already exist ,your EA account is linked, they can track purchases, they can recognize DLC. They just don’t WANT to fix it because they make money off people rebuying the same packs when they switch from PC to console or vice versa. And the consoles won’t let you download DLC you bought somewhere else because they don’t get paid for it. So it’s literally just business politics and greed, not difficulty. They could make it cross-buy tomorrow if they cared, but they don’t because the double purchases are too profitable.

  • If they're are gonna force people to rebuy the same **bleep** packs like we’re stupid, then a digital trade-in or exchange system should 100% exist. And the wild part? It’s fully possible. They could do it tomorrow. The tech is already there. They just don’t wanna build it because it messes with their little corporate coins. They literally already track every pack you own, what platform you bought it on, your EA account, your PSN/Xbox account , all that. So it would be NOTHING for them to set up a system like, “I own this on PlayStation, give me the PC version,” or “I bought it on PC, give me credit toward the console version.” Boom, done. They have the data. They have the tech. They just choose not to do it because convenience for players doesn’t make them money.

And here’s the part they’ll never say out loud: Sony and Microsoft don’t allow lost revenue.

If you “trade in” a $25 DLC pack, Sony loses their 30% cut. They’re not letting you refund or convert anything that takes money out of their store. They don’t want you buying a pack on PlayStation and then turning around and using that money to play on PC. Absolutely not. Then EA, being EA, is looking at all the people who switch platforms and happily rebuy the same pack again at full price. That’s free money to them. A trade-in or cross-buy system would kill all those duplicate sales. So of course they keep it messy and inconvenient on purpose.

And what makes it even more ridiculous is that they COULD give us: a cross-grade discount, a platform swap, a digital trade-in credit, a universal bundle that covers all versions…like literally so many options that are easy as hell to implement. None of it breaks the game. It just breaks their revenue stream. And THAT’S why it doesn’t exist.

The link to the EA account is different subject entirely. It is just a requirement for ALL EA products. The formatting is different between PC and consoles. In fact the formatting is different between xbox and playstation, so even different consoles can not transfer. It isn't about not wanting to do it, it is about the fact it is not possible. You might want to use google as I found the reasoning why what you are wanting can't be done for any video games very easily and with multiple sources.

I have purchased multiple DLC's on my Xbox console and was very disappointed to find that I couldn't use it on my PC even though I bought it with my own money and shouldn't have to pay for it again just to enjoy PC gameplay.

I understand that the Sims4 is fully keyboard accessible on Xbox but for example if I wanted to add custom content to a save with DLC's on my Xbox, I can't. If I wanted to play with custom content on my PC, I would have to repurchase said DLC's.

This is an issue I deeply want resolved and the access of DLC's to transfer through from my Xbox account to my PC. I have my Xbox account linked to my EA account therefore I should be able to play with the DLC I purchased.
