What's Great, What's Missing, and What Could Be Better?

Hey everyone, just wanted to throw out a few thoughts on The Sims 4 and hear what you all think.

I always wondered, we have the Criminal Career, so why didn’t we have burglars anymore like in the old games? Luckily, they finally brought them back with the Burglars Update. It’s surprising that it took over ten years to bring back something so basic. After watching the Burglars Update video on YouTube, I kept getting tons of Tintaverse videos recommended, comparing the different Sims games in all sorts of ways. Don’t get me wrong, The Sims 4 is a great game. But personally, I feel like The Sims 2 and 3 had way more attention to detail.

About expansions, I totally get why people say they’re just way too expensive. I can actually see both sides. I bought all of them myself, but to be fair, some packs like The Sims™ 4 Laundry Day Stuff could’ve just been part of a free update to the base game.

Speaking of the base game, without expansions, it really feels pretty empty and not super fun to play. If it still cost money today, I don’t think many people would even bother buying it just for the base game.

Now onto bugs. Sure, no game’s totally bug-free, but sometimes it feels like certain bugs just stick around for months without getting fixed. There’s one bug I noticed over a year ago. It was reported four months ago by rory_nutt  and FalconSims, and it’s still there. Like, seriously, how is that still a thing?

About mods: I’m not a huge fan of mods for The Sims, but some of the stuff mods add would be amazing to have officially in the game. For example, it would be awesome if you could set opening and closing hours for your businesses, especially with The Sims™ 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack out now. I always forget to open or close my stores when I’m not playing actively, and it’s kinda annoying.

Also, it’d be super cool to bring back vehicles like in the old games. Just something you can put in your driveway and use as a fast-travel point. Your Sim could hop in to go to work, and while they’re gone, the car just disappears. Nothing crazy or super animated, just a little touch for more realism.

Overall, I’m genuinely impressed by all the ideas the community comes up with. Some are a little wild, but a lot are truly awesome, like this idea for example. Who knows, maybe EA will pick up on a few and actually add them.

So what about you guys? What would you love to see added to The Sims? Would love to hear your takes!

  • i totally agree with your opinions about what they did improved, what's missing and what could be better

i rather not use mods unless it gets updated once in awhile and untill it's either in basegame or in packs of course because the less mods, the better

i'm open-minded for most things, some may be wild but i can deal with most of them

i created some of my ideas like the venue types that's missing Can we have a clothing shop and a new lot challenge? (basegame with a possibly new basegame world) another basegame idea Can we have a supermarket?

definitely a basegame thing Can we have a auto-roof in The Sims 4? and this one More walls and floors option for The Sims 4?  also a basegame thing Can we have a non-tropical beach world as basegame?

CAS basegame: Can we have more unnatural skintones? and Can we have more eye colours options as basegame update?

An updated version from this pack idea game pack idea

Can we have a castle fantasy Game Pack? another game pack idea

Home Schooling game pack idea another game pack idea

Can we have a pack based on multi-community venue type? another game pack idea

Hotel pack ideas either expansion or game pack idea

Can we add something with some kind of food/drinks allergies in CAS? both packs and basegame that's foods and drinks related

Can we have a fairy pack in the sims 4? either expansion or game pack idea

there are more ideas of course, i just listed a couple of them

i saw the open ocean pack idea too and i love the idea of it

  • I think part of the problem is framing.

"It took them 10 years to..."

I mean, it didn't. It took them a while, I'm sure, because making video games is hard work- they concept out features, they figure what's feasible and what isn't, they decide how to handle them, they have to design and develop the visual elements, etc etc etc...but saying "It took them 10 years" makes it sound like since 2014 they were struggling to figure out how to add burglars.

The fact is, they simply didn't consider them a priority. That's a different thing than "It took them 10 years".

(It's also weird you cite the tintaverse video showing that the Sims 4 burglars are- as many Sims 4 versions of features are- better than the earlier games by a wide margin, but then use it as evidence they didn't do a good enough job...)

And then you go on to say "The base game isn't worth money". My dude, it's been free fo- oh, you know it's free. But you're still...commenting on its value as a paid product. Which is isn't. So...who...cares? Why does that factor in at all?

You'll enjoy the game a LOT more if you look at it genuinely and with honesty and respect instead of going into it wanting to be upset so badly that you are upset about situations that don't exist.

  • I think it would be nice if there were more pack integrations and more functionality to gameplay that's already available in game. Like cops for example. If I don't play cop career I don't know that there are cops in game. We should be able to see cops patrolling the streets, call the cops for whatever reason, visit the police station to make a complaint, etc.

Honestly, I do not really understand why you think I am upset. I was simply sharing my neutral opinion and personal thoughts about the game. Just because I mention a few things I think could be better does not mean I am going into it wanting to be upset.
That is why I also do not quite understand why you are trying to relativize what I said. I still enjoy The Sims 4 and appreciate the improvements that have been made. My feedback was just meant to share a personal perspective, not to attack the game or the developers. I do get your point about prioritization versus development time, and I agree that it is an important distinction. My intention was not to imply that they had been actively working on burglars for ten years, but simply that it took a very long time for that feature to return, which many longtime players missed. Also, I mentioned the Tintaverse videos to show that The Sims 4 has improved some aspects, but that does not change the fact that some players (like me) felt it was missing for far too long. As for the base game, my comment was more about how empty it feels without expansions, not really about its current free status.

i bet this person who shared its opinion is very much aware the game isn't perfect and that it may take years untill things gets added (especially Expansion Packs) and some stuff is difficult to add

you make it sounds like everything is all negative about The Sims 4 based on how you respond to this person but i feel the exact opposite around with this post, this person mentions what they did right, what it's missing and what they could do better, i think it's a normal thing to mention it in this post so this person keeps it neutral...i saw lots of comments about how bad The Sims 4 is and such which actually annoys me (someone else made a post about negative comments on YouTube on this website) so this post isn't actually too negative in my honest opinion

as for the basegame itself, i get what this person means, it have so little options, so little venue types you can choose from and so little things you can explore around and lesser skills with only basegame too, it's good for a starter but if you want something more then yes it will get bored if you only have the basegame of it once you get used to The Sims 4, we all know the basegame is free nowadays

the person who shared its opinions isn't upset, this person have a every right to share its opinions without being too negative over it and i believe this person did a good job at it, i also try to keep things neutral but i couldn't have worded it better like this person did though

Ofcourse the game ist for free now, but it wasn't for about 12 Years. When the game came out, it costed 60€ which is quite expensive for so little content. So yeah it would be a lot more fun if they included more in the base game. And there are still shops who sell the game for money.

I totally agree with you. There’s definitely a lot of potential to expand on the mechanics that are already in place. For example, seeing cops out on patrol would add a lot to the atmosphere, just like you mentioned. It’s strange that if you don’t play the Detective career, you’d barely know cops exist at all. It would be great if we could also call the police when something happens, like when a kleptomaniac Sim steals something or when another Sim keeps trying to start fights. That happens to my teenage Sims pretty often after school. One Sim usually starts insulting everyone nearby, except for the teachers.

I’d also love to see more interactions with the fire department and pets. I know there’s already an event where a pet goes missing for a while, but that could be taken further. Maybe the pet is actually stuck in a tree in your backyard and can’t get down. Then you could call the fire department either through your phone or directly by interacting with the tree. A firefighter career could be interesting too. I was in the fire department myself, so I’d definitely enjoy it, although it might be a bit too much for the game. Still, the firefighters we have right now don’t really work well. Most of the time when a fire breaks out, which happens in almost every save I start, they just stand outside and wait. By the time they actually do something, I’ve already put the fire out myself.
