game shutting down (during build mode)

ive not done much gameplay since the update, mainly cas and build mode, and this is an issue ive only encountered in build mode (also i play on a laptop, on laptop mode, in case thats relevant)

randomly (i haven't noticed any pattern in the timing), my game has been freezing, cutting to black, and shutting itself down. first, it was when i was placing a cc item, so i didn't use it next time (or since). the next time it happened, i can't remember what i was doing, but there had been a BE exception report about a single gameplay-related package file that apparently had tuning issues. i had been thinking i could postpone sorting it out bc theres no way a single package file not even in use could be an issue? but i redownloaded the mod since i wasn't sure if i had the most recent version. i got the same exception report, the game shut down again, and i removed the mod.

just now, with a fully fixed, up-to-date and glitchless mods folder (if some duplicate cc, but thats always been the case and i can't be bothered to sort it out (but actually while im here if anyone has an easy way to sort that out that would be nice)), i was just moving the camera around, inspecting the build that i am redoing YET AGAIN, the game shut down. i wasnt placing anything, deleting anything, or actively using mods that i havent used before without issues or potentially broken mods. i was literally just moving the camera, and the game freezes, the screen goes black, and im back on the steam page.

i am going to lose my mind if this isnt fixed soon. i haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue so it might just be me, and if it is if someone could offer a fix i owe you my (sims') life

also gonna note my game has been taking unnecessarily long to load occasional things to the point where ive had to force quit the game with task manager, and when i try doing the same things again they dont take nearly as long. might be related but idk

  • just the save. i thought there might be an issue going on in my save files, like idk some sort of corruption, so i reinstalled all my mods & cc and saved everything i was working on in my saves to my library, and completely wiped my saves folder. i started a new save (with mods & cc if that matters), and it shut down within an hour. it could be worth noting that all the times the game has shut down ive been working on decorating, but the one time it hasnt, i had decided that since my progress was likely to be wiped i would practice actually building, so i only used terrain tools, & built walls and roofs. not sure how that would make a difference but idk maybe it is? also the build w cc i started working on since the when the shutting down started has been one ive been improving that was in my library, and the build i was decorating when it shut down after i put back my saves was a shell from the gallery. again, not sure why something being from the gallery/library vs from scratch also makes a difference but atp i feel like literally anything could be relevant (sorry for not mentioning these things if theyre like the missing pieces to figuring out whats wrong haha)

  • hello, so i decided to just go ahead and use an unedited lot on the previous save, and it glitched within an hour. i tried again with the save i made before i added all my other saves back and it glitched within like half an hour - and this was just after the game updated. do you have any recommendations on what to do?

  • thanks so much for your help! can i just check, do i need to test the save that i was playing on when the game was shutting down or will a new one be fine? all my saves have loads of cc and if i go back to the building i was working on i feel like i might break something without all of it

I have done all of that already, unfortunately. I've done all the diagnostics, clean install, changed launcher, repaired, etc. Even with a brand new, newly installed game in a new save, the issue persists.

    HI lookitsamy

glad to hear it's working with the new save.

You can now start to copy back things from Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_Old to the new Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 folder that was created.

First only copy (I suggest to copy so you can go back in case anything goes wrong along the way) the content of the folder Saves (these are your save games). If you are prompted if want to overwrite a save, decide if you want to keep that testing save you just made or not. If not, just overwrite if, if you want to keep it, rename the save to a different number that isn't taken.

Test just your save game with nothing else added back. If that works, you can start copying back the rest. If not, check back.

You will need the following folders

    - Tray (your households and lots you have saved to library)- Custom Music (if you added any)
    - Screenshots (if you've taken any)
    - Videos (if you've taken any)
    - ConfigOverride (if you made any although I recommend redoing those)
    - Options(.ini) (although I recommend to just redo your settings in the game)

Now test again. If that still works, you can put back your mods. Put them back in groups and make sure they are still compatible with the game.

All other files are recreated and not needed.

  • hiya, i tried this (just realised i didn't do anything to repair it but that doesn't seem to have mattered) and ive been in build mode for maybe a couple hours? without it shutting down, and im pretty sure it was taking less time than this to break, so it seems like the error is gone with the new file. what do i do next?

  • Hi lookitsamy Babzbaggins

    Try the following

    - Close the game
    - Rename Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 to Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_Old
    - Repair the game
    - Start the game. All your content will be gone now as the game created a new folder. All your saves/.. is still in the old folder so not to worry.
    - Start a new save game
    - Check if you still have the error
    - Report back with your results for further steps on how to get your stuff back.
