patriciabatara I had that exact issue after they added the family tree upgrade/update to the game. However, the only sims that had the issue with were specific sims that I had used a mod to re-create the family connections/relationships on when I mixed them into a new save maybe a year or more ago. The mod I used was UI Cheats. Below is what I see when I go to another save (where I used the cheats mod to re-create certain family connections) and open the genealogy popup. When I see this popup, my game freezes.

When I used the mod I was ridiculously careful since I don't normally use Mods/CC. I added the mod and did this relationship setup for select sims, then I removed the mod, removed the mods folder so it created a fresh one, removed the localthumbcache.package file, and repaired the game before re-entering. I never had any issues before that update to the game. I have no idea if the mod maker did an update that may prevent this. I am not putting any other mod in my game, though, even an updated one. This really made me sad. So... the workaround/compromise I did was as follows for the sims that were affected in my current game save (a copy of that previous game save mentioned) that were most important to me to have their family, in relationship to each other. I saved them into my library as follows and deleted them in the current game. This apparently reset their relationships/cleared out the family tree part, and the effects from using the mod:

Not sure what all was needed of this, but I separated all 8 Sims (including the child/children) and saved them individually into my library. Then...

    1. In Manage World/World Map view I clicked "Create New Household to Move In" (lower right corner).  This opens CAS.
    2. I left in the 'default, game-created Sim' and clicked my 'Open the Gallery' icon in CAS to view 'My Library', and chose one of my individually-uploaded Sims
Sim > 'Placed Household' > Merge Household? > then choose "Merge". Now the Sim is in the new household.
    3. I deleted the 'default, game-created Sim', then I proceeded to add all of the rest of my individually-uploaded Sims from my library in the same manner.
    4. I made everyone but the two original parents of the adult children (plus they are grandparents to a couple of the household Sims) children. So the whole household was made of children and the two original parents (who are also grandparents).
    5. Then I went through one at a time... made the two adults married and parents to their children (and checked for visa-versa).
    6. Then I aged up their two children to adult. I made them parent to their children in the household (and checked for visa-versa).
    7. Then I aged up the daughters-in-law and made them wives and moms to their children  (and checked for visa-versa).

I went through then and double checked, that everyone had the correct relationship to each other. I had to re-add their traits for the most part, I think they still had their jobs and skills!

My results did remove the family tree issue for the sims when I re-entered them into the game. However, their relationships were severed with anyone outside that household. These were the core sims I was working with and wanted to use family trees for in this save. I also did this with some of the other sims I wanted to play in this save that also had the issue, but of course there are limitations to how many sims I can reestablish in family trees this way. I think I deleted the 'non-essential' family members that I didn't fix in this save to avoid the possibility of this happening if I open their family tree. This workaround was a compromise that I was happy enough with.

So, bottom line, though I used the UI Cheats mod a long time ago on their relationships, then removed it, the effects in regards to the relationships/family tree for these sims was apparently embedded into the sims I used it on. In my case I am very invested in not losing the last year-plus of work on these sims, so using this compromise on them 'cleaned them up' and removed the issue in my game save.  Not sure in anything in all this mess will be helpful in your game, but there it is. Good luck!

  • patriciabatara Try renaming the "The Sims 4" folder to something else, then start the game.  Go through making and placing the sim.  Check to see if the issue still happens.  It shouldn't.  Then save and quit.  Move your old saves folder over to the new "The Sims 4" folder.  Run the game and see if it happens then.  Don't save before quitting.  If it does happen, then something is wrong with the save and you'd be best served abandoning it.  If it doesn't happen, then copy over your mods folder from the old folder to the new one.  Start the game again.  If the issue doesn't happen, you should be good to go.  If it does happen, then you'll need to go through your mods folder testing things until you find whatever is broken or causing the problem and update/delete it.

    Hope this helps.
