Random Crashes - Please Help!

Hi,

Similar to a previously solved thread, I am experiencing random crashing through different parts of the game. I do not run mods or CC in my game.

I've crashed during CAS, B&B mode, and most often during gameplay. I crashed tonight at almost an hour played - created a new sim, built a new house, started gameplay at 30 mins after spinning up a new game. I accepted an invitation from a creepy stranger on day 2 (after getting fired from work), went to meet them at the hotel, went back to the bar, got a call from my neighbor telling me they needed a place to stay. I said yes, and it crashed.

I've attached my DxDiag.txt to this file. I've previously renamed my save folders, then deleted everything and installed new, updated my PC to Windows 11, and most recently just updated my drivers.

I've seen mention of updating the BIOS on other people's messages, but I haven't tried that yet. Please help.. this is my comfort game and it's making me sad that I can't play anymore.

  • Spookyfish24  Thanks for the dxdiag, but it only lists one error, which is odd in and of itself.  That's a Sims 4 error that is sometimes associated with a crash but more often accompanies a freeze/endless loading situation.  So it's not necessarily much help here.  And that doesn't explain where all the other errors went.  If you're using a cleaner app that could be deleting temp files, please disable it while troubleshooting—these error reports can be extremely helpful.

Separately, please look for relevant errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for errors that happened at exactly the time of any recent Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  I don't need duplicates, just a sense of how often something happens.  If you get another crash but don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

  • Spookyfish24  This is the same type of error as I saw in your dxdiag, in fact it may be the same crash.  Either way, it doesn't provide any more insight than the info in the dxdiag, unfortunately.  I'd still like to see this same info from any crashes going forward though.  If you see another AppHangB1, you don't need to copy the rest of the data, but anything else would be useful.

I'd also like to know the context for each crash you see going forward, at least for a while.  Even if they're random, it's good to know that for a fact.

Since an AppHangB1 can also be related to the graphics driver, and we don't have anywhere else to start, please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver.  Here's how:

I re-read your message about the crash type, and It made me think about how the 'crash' happens.. the game freezes, and if I'm not running in a window, it will go to a white screen and it doesn't actually crash.

I can't shell over to other applications (I'll have task manager open to try and force-close the game) and it won't stay on another application - it will be locked to the Sims 4 (unless I'm playing in windowed mode, then it will eventually tell me the game stopped responding and ask if I want to wait or close the game).

  • Spookyfish24  This is the same error and just as vague, although now we can say it's not related to the graphics driver.  Are you still testing with a new save, or did you restore an old one?  I would definitely try a completely new save: freshly-made sims, default EA lots, nothing from the Gallery or your own library.

Other than that, please try playing in a clean boot:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

If this helps, you can selectively reenable services until you find the culprit, then either leave that disabled or (if it belongs to an app you want to keep using) let me know what it is so we can try to fix the underlying issue.

If the game freezes or crashes in a clean boot, please try again, except with your computer offline.  You can sign into the EA App and put it in offline mode, then disable wifi and/or disconnect the ethernet cable before pressing Play.

If even that doesn't help, please play in a clean boot in a new admin Windows account.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account or any email address.  You'll be able to sign into the EA App and launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your saves and other user data won't be available.  You'll likely need to play while online the first time.
