White screen on startup

Hello! I've been trying to tackle this issue by myself for now, but the problem keeps on persisting.

My game looks like this when I try to open it after I updated it yesterday (have not been playing in months):

I have tried repairing and uninstalling both the game and the EA app multiple times, but it didn't work. At times, task manager says TS4 is "not responding", sometimes the game doesn't show up on the list in my active programs at all. I can't close the game through the window, I need to manually force it to stop through task manager each time I try to open it. I have also updated my graphics drivers - one person suggested to check whether my graphic drivers are found by the application. This is what comes up in the config:

Name (driver):   NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
Name (database):  [Found: 0, Supported: 1]

So, I guess it could be related to my drivers, but I did also uninstall and reinstall them after this issue came up, so idk. The rest of the games I play work fine, TS4 is the only one I have been having problems with.

I used to play with lots of mods in my game, however, I moved both them and my saves into a different folder for the updating process. None of the mods I use are outdated and the problem doesn't go away even without mods.

I have tried changing the fullscreen/resolution settings for the game through Options.ini as it was suggested to other people, nothing has changed. I have also ran an anti-virus through my files and nothing pops up, everything should be fine.

Thanks in advance!

  • shirobya  You're getting the video card error with the slightly older driver you installed, the one that worked before?  That's odd, but in that case, I think the best thing to do is to reinstall the newest driver and use a different workaround.  You obviously don't want to play on the iGPU, but switching to it temporarily and then back to the Nvidia GPU has helped some users.

The point is that the video card error is more stubborn than the white screen.  And it's possible that using the newest driver won't fix the issue either, so let me know what you get.

Yes, I actually updated it myself, I didn't realize it would cause more issues.. However, I'll make sure to disable the auto-updates, thank you.

Last time I updated it manually, because the game wouldn't seem to open without me updating the driver. Last time (I manually selected the Nvidia driver to play TS4 before updating and) the game gave me an error code saying 'can't run TS4 with the video card in this system', so I figured updating would've fixed that. Worked just fine for the two weeks in between my posts in this thread, but yeah, seems like touching the drivers unnecessarily wasn't a good idea..

I uninstalled/reinstalled it again, and the same error code pops up when trying to open the game. Not sure how to work around this bit without updating the driver, though.

    Thanks again!

  • shirobya  Did you let your Nvidia graphics driver update?  I ask because I doubt HP has posted this new a driver, and your current Intel driver is older than the one your first dxdiag listed, so it looks like you correctly reverted to the HP-provided drivers.  But the Nvidia driver your current dxdiag lists is the newest one, so it probably updated for one reason or another.

One possible cause is having GeForce Experience installed, or perhaps the newer Nvidia App, and allowing it to auto-update your drivers.  I don't think Windows would update the driver on its own to this particular version; it seems to still be using a driver from last August.  But you may have another app running updates for you.  If so, please disable that.

Please also remove the current Nvidia driver and install the one from HP again.  You don't need to uninstall the Intel driver.  When installing the Nvidia driver, choose the Custom (not Express) install method, if you see the option, and deselect GeForce Experience or the Nvidia App if it's listed.  If you really want to use one or the other, save that for later, and be sure to decline the offer to keep your driver updated.

tricia1002  Everything in my second response to the OP applies to you as well: you have an affected Omen laptop that should respond to the workarounds, and your dxdiag also lists the same type of crash of the graphics driver.  So please use those instructions.  And make sure nothing is updating your Nvidia graphics driver, as I've written above in this post.

I have been experiencing the same issue as you. My Sims 4 has been giving me the white loading screen since the early June update. Everything I have tried has not been working. My gaming laptop is less than a year old, so I should not be experiencing any game issues yet. Any help related to this issue will be greatly appreciated. Please & thank you. 🙏🏽 I took the time to provide my dxdiag as well!

  • Okay, so, an update on the situation.

Unfortunately, the issue came up again.. It crashed mid-game and the exact same things keep repeating. Could there be something with TS4 causing this issue to repeat itself, or is it related to my laptop and the graphic drivers somehow just not being compatible with the game/way I play? Or is there maybe something that could be causing for my graphic card to crash repeatedly? I was playing the game with mods, tried launching without and nothing changed. I have the game updated to the most recent patch, so that couldn't be the issue.

Is there anything I can do, except for reinstalling the drivers again? I know this isn't directly related to TS4, but do you think that contacting HP directly could help fix the issue (so that it wouldn't keep repeating itself at least)? It seems that the Intel card works again, but I really wouldn't want to put too much weight on it, as I like to play with the highest possible settings my laptop just can run...

Here's my new dxdiag file attached as well.

Thank you so much, I'm able to play the game again!

I ended up trying a few of the solutions to fix the issue. Changing the active graphics card for TS4 worked (Intel had no issue running the game), but the crashes you mentioned concerned me so I uninstalled + reinstalled both of my drivers according to the instructions. I have had some issues with the laptop, especially the screen, so I'm hoping that this will also help me with those issues along the line. I prefer using the Nvidia card because I can't play the game with the graphics as I like to without it, so this worked perfectly. So far it has been running super well, I'm so grateful you took the time to help me out with this! 😊

  • shirobya  It does help, because this is a common issue on newer HP gaming laptops but can happen in other contexts, so I didn't want to assume this was the usual HP problem.  Here are a few workarounds:

None of these works for everyone, but something almost always does, so keep trying the workarounds until you find one that lets you play.

Your dxdiag does list a number of crashes of the graphics driver as well, or rather one of them.  Sometimes these happen in the context of the known HP laptop issue, but if nothing above helps, you might also have a problem with one of the drivers.  So the next step would be to do a clean uninstall and reinstall of both drivers, as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

Start with the drivers HP provides for your laptop; you can update the Nvidia driver later if necessary, but it's best to test first with the one from HP.  Go here:

    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/laptops

Enter your serial number, choose your OS (just Windows 11 is fine) if prompted, click All Drivers, expand Driver-Graphics, and download the newest Intel and Nvidia drivers by version number.  The first number matters most, e.g. 32 is newer than 31; after that, the last four numbers matter.

The proper order of operations is uninstall the Nvidia driver > uninstall the Intel driver > restart > reinstall the Intel driver > restart > reinstall the Nvidia driver > restart, all while your computer is offline.

  • shirobya  Please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

The unsupported video card is unrelated and wouldn't cause any actual problems in-game.
