FPS Drop When Facing Certain Direction

After the latest update (June 24), Apex performance dropped heavily on my system. I used to get stable 145–230 FPS across all maps, I now get 40–80 FPS when facing certain directions, but 300 FPS when looking elsewhere.
I’ve tried multiple AMD drivers (including 25.6.1, 24.3.1, 24.8.1 WHQL), reinstalled Windows and Apex, cleared all game configuration files like videoconfig.txt and tested all relevant launch options and autoexec tweaks. Nothing has fixed the issue. This doesn’t happen in other games that I tested.

PC Spec :
Intel i3 12100F
16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
AMD RX 6600 8GB
Windows 11 23H2 (fully updated)
SSD
Apex Steam

  • Downgrading my Asrock motherboard BIOS version from the latest version to version 8.01 BETA solved my fps problem. Although previously I used the latest version from early 2025 and everything was running normally before the S25 split 2 update. It seems there is something with the latest apex update and bios version.

That’s the thing, I didn’t have any of those issues before the patch. My FPS was always solid, even during portal animations, loot bins, Bangalore smoke, Catalyst wall, all of it. I’ve been running 145+ FPS consistently for over a season without problems.
It only started after the latest patch. Now I’m getting drops to 40–80 FPS just by looking in certain directions, even when nothing’s happening. It’s not tied to effects or fights, just turning the camera causes FPS drop. Something definitely changed on the engine side with this update.

I did not notice any difference after recent patch on the other hand as said above I have been playing on sub-par settings for 1+ season now = it kinda always feels off.

But yeah what I have not seen since season 7 in terms of fps drops:

    - looking outside the ship through "exhaust" effect
    - dive trails of certain animations
    - opening loot bins
    - looking into loot bin full screen
    - looking at water always had made huge FPS drops and still do e.g. on top of Olympus near Hammonds labs
    - certain gun / grande effects
    - running as Wraith when creating portal (also has this motion blur type of animation that just crashes fps)
    - looking at more open space revealing more map space
    - during fights (basically why I switched to above mentioned setting as I could not track s#%@ while doing 40%+ accuracy in aim training and games like Overwatch)
    - while being in zone and having that "hickup" animation, basically I can hardly hit a bullet while in zone
    - Catalyst ult (wall)
    - Bangalore smoke

Probably forgot a few more that over time just made my fps dip below 100 :)

The weird part is that performance was totally fine on my system before the recent patch, I consistently got over 145 FPS at 1080p (all low) with no drops, even in fights. After the patch, something changed drastically. Now I get huge drops to 40–80 FPS depending on where I look, which clearly didn’t happen before.
I’m on Windows 11 23H2 (core isolation off & background apps disabled). The issue started exactly after the recent patch. I still hope they address whatever's going wrong with AMD. It’s weird how one update can flip performance upside down.
Thanks for chiming in, helps to know it’s not just me.

  • Oh wow "rare" AMD GPU user at least one that is voicing the issue :)

I don't know about you, but I have had issues with FPS stability since day 1 and read a lot about it -> all went down to two factors:
    1. Apex is optimized for Nvidia
    2. Apex in general is very bad in terms of optimization (they have had multiple times where they removed effects because they crashed FPS including some of the dive trails :D)

I personally play on 3600X CPU, identical ram, Apex is installed on fast M.2, and 5700XT GPU. Given I have 2k monitor I play on 2k / 1440p resolution all low and my FPS rarely exceeded 200, "stable" 120 max excluding dropship where I regularly got 80-90.

Based on the post I assume you play 1080p or upscale the game?

Also another issue might be windows 11, I am hearing a lot of bad things about it in relation to gaming, need to tweak it a lot to get max performance, in this case I stick with Windows 10 which has also been tuned over time but only thing that really help game vise was network setting optimization.

Otherwise I gave up on stable FPS -> enabled Freesync + Vsync + Radeon anti lag (recently Apex seemed to have adjusted / made game compatible with it) = game now has bigger input lag, at times feel rubber banding but at least I can track people better, shots register more predictably.
