It's related to Google Play Services.

I never connected to EA before so I don't think that can work if you just used google play to save progress. Am I wrong?

I think you're right. I didn't have an EA account until this debacle, only Google Play, and when I try to reload using the EA account it defaults to start of the game with all of my progress gone. I've also noticed that when I dig into my Google Play games account it keeps automatically signing me out, but just for SWGOH, none of the other games use my Google Play account for
