Why is there no effort put into pre-mades’ family trees and ancestors?

In previous Sims’ games (especially Sims 2) The developers made a lot of effort to show characters’ heritage and backstories. I loved reading all about their upbringing, family trees, memories etc but it seems The Sims team don’t make as much effort these days which is a shame.

If we look at the Sims 4 pre-made families, all of them are first generation (no ancestors), their outfits are dull, they don’t have any storylines or interesting connections to other families. Almost like they were thrown together last minute by a random generator.

When they have included iconic Sims in Sims 4, they’ve forgotten or disregarded their personality and original family tree so there are inconsistencies, this seems lazy? For example, Dina & Nina’s mother is Nighat Caliente in TS2 but in Sims 4, it’s Katrina? It makes no sense and apart from their hair colours, the twins don’t really resemble the original characters physically or personality. If Dina Caliente isn’t the same gold-digging, Alien descendant, fashion icon then what’s the point?

I know some of the requests we ask for content wise is limited because of resources and budget etc but adding a back story, heritage and making a bit of effort to follow the ancestry rules would take minimal effort and no financial resources?

I’d love to see more references to the iconic families like Goth, Landgraab, Alto, Crumplebottom etc in the future. I feel like the Sims team are overlooking how important these little details are but maybe it’s just me?

Well you pretty much answered your own question with "In previous Sims’ games (especially Sims 2) The developers made a lot of effort to show characters’ heritage and backstories." the current developers truly don't care no true effort is put into anything and it shows.

It's a lot of work but to be fair, if I was employed on the TS4 team, this is something I'd be advocating for and would expect to be working on. Lore is surely the most important thing when creating worlds. Just look at LOTR, GoT, Vampire Chronicles, and other successful "story worlds", the lore is thick and consistent.

None of these are sandbox videogames, though. They are books, which are based around characters, backstory, and intrigue to captivate the reader. There is a massive difference between a simulation/sandbox game than a book. They two cannot be compared, no matter how much you squint and try and draw comparisons.

Fair point, although I would counter the argument that the two cannot be compared. Lore and history are the same no matter what context they are delivered, be it a book, a movie or a video game world. For instance Lord of the Rings Online is a much better game because it is so connected to the vast lore of Tolkiens writing, than it would be if it was based on meaningless mobs and bosses.

I understand that to some, The Sims 4 is a sandbox simulation game that doesn't focus on continuity. Though to me, it's a life simulation game where pre-made families do have history, lore and ancestry persisting throughout a vast series of games, with some prominent ancestors being influential in shaping the current populations of TS4.

I guess my question to developers would be, why have years and years of backstories, ancestry and in game item lore... if it's not going to be used in already available features, such as family trees and relationships.

    Thank goodness for MCCC. :)
  • I found that I mean even the Sims 1 had back story’s for the Sims in the Sims 2 we had life & death And more social interactions are story progression the Sims 3 you had a real living world NPC’s would live and die Have kids as your sims did and an open world. The Sims 4 is different we do not have storylines or progression a sim does and that’s it the NPC’s don’t have kids (usually). I had a family one and by the time I got to my 3rd generation the only place that had any life was the active career lotsthe sims 5 needs to fix all that.
  • Agree, the only personality and characters the pre made sims have is their appearance. For example Nancy Landgraab is iconic but that's just from her appearance, her personality is the same as every other sim.
It seems like in a lot of other packs aswell the pre-made sims are just sort of there, they have no personality or backstory like the families in Glimmerbrook - no character, personality or individuality at all they're just boring sims. And then the few sages are just homeless sims that lurk around the realm. All we really need is some sort of backstory or family tree, something to make these sims stand out and be interesting other than their appearance.
Also mermaids in Island Living - where are they? We needed some sort of depth on the mermaid storyline, even just a household of mermaids built into the world is better than nothing but there physically isn't any mermaids unless you create them.

I didn't play them at Uni, but had Julia move in with my sim in Sulani (he met her while he was working on his degree). She didn't know anyone except my sim. No Becca Clarke in her relationship panel.

I started a game with them recently and they had Best Friends status and a nearly full relationship bar.
  • Funnily enough I was never that interested in the premade Sims but now that we don't really have much lore or backstory I kind of miss it!
  • Yeah I really wish there was graveyards ion TS4. Partly for the ancestry and partly because the ghosts were mad cool. I do really dislike the fact that the families all die out after one generation because there's no continuity. It's either you dedicate a bunch of time to adding your own Sims in every generation or you allow the houses to be filled with random townies. I like with TS3 where I was able to be friends with multiple generations of Sims. It made it seem like more of a community tbh.

I’ve spent a lot of timing giving the more iconic premades back stories and family connections. I’ve downloaded recreations of sims from past games and connected them to the existing ones. For examples I have the bachelor family with Simis, Jocasta and Michael. They are connected as Bella’s parents and brother. Then I have Gunter and Cornelia goth as Mortimer parents. I like that my sims have family connections and back stories. I really miss that as well.
  • I spent entire months of my life continuing the stories of premades in The Sims 2. That thing had me hooked
I do spend some time creating my own stories and geneology but it takes a huge effort especially because the Sims 4 lacks relationship statuses and personality impact to really bring stories to life.

One thing that is worse with the premades though is that every new save you make, you have THE same premades back to how they were at the start! If I see Don Lothario one more time, or Bella Goth again I swear...!

The thing is I have one save in which I played the Goth family for two generations. I switch to another save and boom Bella is a young adult again. I can't!

PS. I realize there is a workaround with that but it's a lot of effort guys c'mon.
