Re: Sims4 still crashes or hangs with latest patch on MacOS

Definitely a CPU lockup, trying to get some stacktraces, but information on the web is just useless.

Received CPU usage trigger:
The Sims 4[5331] () used 90.00s of CPU over 165.07 seconds (averaging 54%), violating a CPU usage limit of 90.00s over 180 seconds.
process The Sims 4[5331] thread 106970 caught burning CPU! It used more than 50% CPU over 180 seconds
RESOURCE_NOTIFY trigger for The Sims 4 [5331] (90003485670 nanoseconds of CPU usage over 165.00s seconds, violating limit of 90000000000 nanoseconds of CPU usage over 180.00s seconds)
Saved cpu_resource.diag report for The Sims 4 version 1.0 (1) to The Sims 4_2020-12-13-151941_mbp15bee.cpu_resource.diag

After a longer while, macOS watchdog sees there is a problem. Still nothing in log files for SIMS4 though.

-[PersistentAppsSupport saveLogoutPersistentState:finalSnapshot:] | checkAgainstApp is : The Sims 4
-[PersistentAppsSupport appShouldBeRelaunched:] | entered. checking app: The Sims 4
-[PersistentAppsSupport saveLogoutPersistentState:finalSnapshot:] | Adding to relaunchArray: The Sims 4

The game is still hard-locked at this point, and the only thing to do is to kill the game.

I didn't mention, but there is no mods.

    @madchap57

Just remove the "XML" from the lastCrash report in TextEdit then attach it. The numbers in the file name are also meaningful.

Please can you provide more information about your Mac. Instructions on how to do so and what to provide here - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612396/highlight/true#M162

Did you try with a new Sims 4 folder? Trying to narrow down the exact cause and if it is model specific.

    Macbook pro 15, 2018.

    2.2Ghz 6-core i7

    16gb of ram

    Radeon pro 555X 4Gb

I believe we tried clearing out that folder yes.

Would there be some more engineering-centric help just than poking around and hoping for the best that EA could provide?

I told my daughter to call me if she encounters the problem again (but she's not definitely playing everyday :-)) so that I can try to run "spindump" on the sim4 pid, since there is nothing showing up in the Console.app.

The same happens on the 16" MBPs https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/WORKAROUND-Problems-playing-Sims-4-on-the-16-quot-MacBook-Pro/m-p/8750583#M27203

Disabling automatic graphics switching seems to help those users (see solution on page 1 in the link) but they seem to have to download gfxCardStatus to make the switch permanent as the Mac is trying to switch back to the Intel chip.

The same issue is also on the current line up of 27" iMacs https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Mac/Sims-4-keeps-crashing-on-2020-iMac-27/td-p/9522077

Thanks 🙂 Could you also attach the lastCrash you reference in your opening post? Just remember to delete XML from the first line.

Please let me know how you get on disabling automatic graphics switching.

Yeah, that's from the 6th December. There was a patch last Monday, could she patch then see if it happens again? If it does please get the lastCrash report again.

Did the disabling graphics switching work?
