EA App cloud sync enumerating save directory of games thousands of times

Launch Game When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 01.26.22 12:00 Summarize your bug (This is tested against Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect Legendary Edition). The EA app has forced cloud sync which has terrible performance when a large number (1000+) of save files are encountered - far worse than it should. When looking at the application behavior in ProcMon it is apparent that a huge amount of time is being wasted enumerating the save directory hundreds of thousands of times. Games take so long to run that it appears like the game will never actually launch. With the new forced EA-app that came into effect today, I have seen many of my mod developers (I head the ME scene) seemingly be unable to run their game. How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%) Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Add a lot of save files to the Mass Effect Legendary Edition saves folder: For example in the modding scene we use this set of save files for each game, labeled (internally) for us to jump to any point in the game. In total this has hundreds of saves. https://me3tweaks.com/permanent/LEDebugSaves.7z These are extracted to: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Save - with each archive being extracted into the respective game. The game must have been run at least once. What happens when the bug occurs? The EA app enumerates the save directory for this game hundreds of thousands of times - essentially running in O(N^2). It takes literally - I'm not even kidding - 5 minutes and 32 seconds for me to run the game. I don't know why it is constantly enumerating the folder list when it seems like it just needs to get a list of files and then cache that into a variable. This current implementation is extremely slow - on the levels of GTA 5 buggy login slow. It is faster when it doesn't have to do a full sync - we're still talking like a minute to launch - but when a save sync occurs (e.g. my other computer generates a new save) it's back to the 5 minutes to run thing again. It really wastes a lot of time, especially for my developers who constantly restart the game. What do you expect to see? I expect better performance. I don't expect miracles but I also don't expect it to take 6 minutes to compare a local and cloud version of a folder that is not more than a couple of megabytes. At the least, I'd want to see one of three things (preferably all of them): 1. Better performance for sync. Do not enumerate this directory hundreds of thousands of times. 2. Show something to the user that something is happening. The app currently gives you zero indication it's doing anything. 3. Give me the option to turn off cloud sync like we could in Origin. That's why this was never a problem before (it was still a pain in Origin but could be easily circumvented). Using ProcMon I was able to filter it to all activity by EADesktop.exe. When cloud sync occurs on game launch, you can see it querying the same directory thousands of times for some reason. Hi guys, thanks to everyone for their participation in the EA Desktop Beta. Some of you are reporting install issues that may be related to locally stored data, so here are the steps you can take to clear this out. To start, close the EA Desktop app. Open the Windows Task Manager. You can press Ctrl, Shift & Esc simultaneously to bring it up. Now locate "EABackgroundService.exe" and close it by right-clicking the entry and selecting "End Task". The next step requires you to view hidden files. If you already have hidden files set to viewable, you can skip this part. In the Windows Search bar type "folder" and choose "File Explorer Options". Go to the View tab and look under Advanced Settings to see a checkbox to "Show hidden files, folders and drives", and select this. Be sure to Apply the change before you go to the next step. Now in Windows File Explorer go to C:\ProgramData\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop. Here, delete each file/folder except for the one marked "Logs". How do I bypass the EA App forced installation and access Origin to play games. I cannot open Origin. It is forcing to install the EA app that does not work! The EA app is broken. Purchased content shows as I don't own it. Missing expansion packs and add-ons that cost a LOT of $$$$ over the year!. Existing game files won't play. You can only re-start a new game file. Reinstalling does not work - attempts to install content says game needs to be updated. Repair did not update. Also if i select a game to download and try to change the game installation directory from the game download menu, same thing happens, I am unable to select a new download directory and just get a blank popup. Every time (100%) Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? either, within the ea desktop app go to settings->downloads and select "edit" on the download directory to try to change it.. another way to reproduce it is to select a game to download, within the popup there is an option to select game install directory. If you try to select a new directory to install this game into, you just get a blank popup. What happens when the bug occurs? instead of getting a popup to select a new drive directory so you can install/download new games into, you get a blank popup instead. What do you expect to see? I expect to be able to select a different drive and/or directory to be able to install my games into. after installing ea desktop app I am unable to change the game installation directory to another drive by going into settings->downloads. No games can launch What do you expect to see? The games launching This forced change over from the Origin Launcher to the EA App Launcher has been a complete disaster. How this was forced on us without the option to wait for a month or so and then immediately none of our games can launch is devistating. I've attempted to look into bug fixes, but not enough information has come out and nobody has seemingly worked out a proper solution for this. It appears as though who ever made this doesn't use the games themselves, like this wasn't tested prior to release. From what I can see, there is no indication on the EA App Launcher nor on the main EA website letting people know that there's any investigation going into this, there has been no temporary hiatus put on forcing people over from Origin meaning more people are being pulled into this glitched out system. There's a ton of confused people posting here on the forums extremely confused and I hate to think of all the children that got given these games or the EA Pass as a present by someone and are absolutely powerless to be able to resolve these issues. None of us know if our save files from our games that we've put hours into are going to become corrupted. I've already heard a ton of people say they've re-installed their games only to find that they've lost all the progress they've made on thousands of hours on games like The Sims. As your customers we need to be protected from these things happening with simple bug testing and investigations prior to releasing something that could heavily effect your customer base, sometimes these things can't be avoided, but at least inform us and take active measures to know something is being done rather than staying quiet while all this happens and put preventative measures in place to not let this happen to everyone else who is unaware and opens the app.Solved8.8KViews47likes103CommentsHow to fix EA app Error Code EC:10005?

I can't launch it, so why does it matter? I should be allowed to play a not updated game if I want. I paid for it! What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Log in to the EA App, make sure to check "keep me logged in" Have your Internet provider have issues, or go into the woods. Point is, you don't have access to the Internet on your computer What happens when the bug occurs? The app sends me on an impossible goose hunt after login credentials on the online servers, and will not let me launch the game unless I travel to a house with Internet, carrying my stationary computer with me. Sometimes the reason is it needs me to log out and log in again, but online. Sometimes my "game license" has expired. When it went to "we corrupted your game files" I gave up and shut the damn machine off. What do you expect to see? A play button, or a way to launch my game, without needing an Internet connection. This always worked with origin. Please give us origin back as an option! This new app does not work! Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. Hi everybody! Is there anyone experiencing issues with the EA app? I've been trying all night long to download/install The Sims 3 + Add-ons, but once the Sims 3 is installed, the add-ons won't installed; it keeps giving me this message '' something went wrong ''. So I am not sure what to do and what's going on. I even tried to open the Sims 3 by clicking on the icon on the desktop (since it's the only one that got installed), but it's telling me it won't works if I do not have Origin installed. So I am confuse since I thought Origin was no longer a thing... I'm not sure what to do; Sims 3 is downloading and installing from the EA app, but once I tried to open the game, it gave me the Origin message . And afterward, the add-ons won't install because '' something went wrong ''. Does anyone know what to do? Is it happening to someone else as well?
