Is Ultimate Team designed more as a monetization system than a football game?

I want to discuss the structure behind Ultimate Team rather than simply complain about gameplay. When you analyze the system logically, several layers appear that explain how the mode works.

First, the economic structure.

Ultimate Team is built around pack sales. Packs contain random rewards, and the best cards have extremely low probabilities. At the same time, the competitive environment pushes players to obtain stronger cards. Because of this, improving a team often becomes connected to opening packs or spending coins.

Second, the power progression.

Every few weeks the game releases new promos, special cards and upgrades. These cards are usually stronger than previous ones. Because of this power creep, cards that were strong a month ago quickly become outdated. Players therefore feel constant pressure to upgrade their squads.

Third, the psychological design.

The pack system uses random rewards, strong visual animations and limited-time events. This creates a reinforcement loop where players feel excitement when opening packs and urgency during promos. Time-limited content also creates fear of missing out.

Fourth, the gameplay layer.

Gameplay often rewards specific attributes such as pace or certain playstyles. Because of this, certain cards become part of the “meta”. These cards are usually the rarest or most expensive ones.

When these layers are combined, Ultimate Team becomes more than just a football mode. It becomes a loop where players constantly chase better cards.

So the real question is not simply whether the game is fair or unfair. The real question is whether the structure of the mode is designed primarily to encourage continuous engagement and spending.

What do you think?

  • It is precisely about engagement and spending.

I haven't played this year because I cannot allocate enough time to be competitive without spending.

Last time I played I was playing unhealthy amounts of squad battles for objectives, played rush for objectives, played rivals for upgraded rewards each week, played weekend league every week and I got rewarded with junk constantly, it is probably the main driver behind me not wanting to buy the game anymore.

I made a thread around laliga tots about how the game was making me fell depressed after opening hundreds and hundreds of packs and doing hundreds of sbc and getting 1 real Madrid tots which was useless because I got vini jr during toty and that's who I got from tots.

I'm not banging my head off that wall again, il leave the store to the whales.

I think what you described actually explains the system very well.

What happened to you is not really about football anymore, it’s about the engagement loop the mode creates. The structure of Ultimate Team connects several things together: time investment, random rewards, progression resets through promos, and the constant introduction of stronger cards.

When those systems interact, the player ends up in a cycle where you feel like you need to keep playing more games, open more packs, complete more SBCs and chase the next upgrade just to stay competitive.

At some point it stops feeling like normal progression and starts feeling like work or pressure.

The fact that you recognized it and stepped away is actually a very healthy decision. Many players stay stuck in that loop without realizing why they feel frustrated or exhausted.

Your experience is a good example of why it’s important for people to understand how these systems work, so they can decide how much time and energy they really want to invest.

  • The game is blatantly designed to exploit people via psychology and manipulative tactics.  The motivation seems to be greed and the ambition seems to be to take rather than give. I would even suggest that there is  a desire to create frustration and anger rather than fun and enjoyment for the customer which to makes the creators evil by nature

I mean it’s widely known that’s all ultimate team is . No brainer the real things to be worried about is the predatory way ea milk money and gamble on a kids game aimed at creating addictions . I wonder if one day they will end up with a huge law suit ? The packs are a scam also they say it’s random and they word things carefully to sound honest but clearly aren’t . Yes everyone has the same chance to pack every player but everyone packs garbage but a few streamers get loads . Pros get all players ea can modify sbc results and pack weight during events or at any time . The fact they can at all meddle with a gambling product in live time and not be accountable us appaling. Spent 7k aud this year to feel what it’s like to use the best players didn’t get any really took 7 months to get mbappe and only got him once his value was non existent. Packs and odds are dictated by the market which is dictated by ea . They control everyone’s luck they exposed that themselves when they had sceramble and fix bugged sbc and rewards and packs overt the years . Scam company like this not sure how they sleep I’m not supporting it not when they can’t even give me prime content iepkayers for my 7k aud 😂gotta laugh at it or cry it’s that bad . Hope many kids don’t spend like I did or play it like I did I’m done after 14 year of it
